Scott Hanselman intros Tizen at Connect();2016Today Samsung announced the release of a second preview of Visual Studio Tools for Tizen, the Linux-based open-source OS running on over 50 million Samsung devices including TVs, wearables, and mobile phones. Developers can download this release to use Visual Studio to build .NET applications for Tizen.

In the keynote of Microsoft’s Connect(); event this past November, Samsung announced collaboration with Microsoft to bring .NET to Tizen and to contribute Tizen support to the popular cross-platform Xamarin.Forms. As part of that announcement, Samsung released the first preview of Visual Studio Tools for Tizen. This second preview is a significant update to the first preview, and includes these key new features:

  • TV application development. The first preview came with mobile application support only. With the second preview, developers can now use the same familiar APIs, such as .NET Standard and Xamarin.Forms, to develop Tizen TV applications.
  • Project wizard. Visual Studio Tools for Tizen provides a number of different options to build applications. For instance, developers may build an application that runs on a single device type or an application that runs on multiple device types. Developers may build an application that runs on Tizen only or an application that runs on multiple platforms. The project wizard helps developers to select the right project type for them with step-by-step guides.
  • New tools. Following Tizen-specific tools are added to further improve developer’s productivity: certificate manager, emulator manager, emulator control panel, and manifest editor.
  • More Tizen platform-specific APIs. The second preview significantly increases the number of Tizen-specific APIs available for .NET developers. Key additions are as follows: Bluetooth, Smart Card, NFC, Map, Wi-Fi Direct, Telephony, Geofence Manager, and Account Service.
