CarouselView Challenge Wrap-up

Paul DiPietro

A Challenge Completed

In mid-September, we pushed the first prerelease of Xamarin.Forms 4.3. We also asked you to participate in the CarouselView Challenge as a follow-up to the CollectionView Challenge we ran in April. Now that the deadline has passed, let’s look back on this challenge and report what was learned. The response to this new challenge was great, with tons of submissions. In the 14 days between the initial post and the deadline, you submitted almost 40 pull requests!

Feedback clearly indicated that your top desire is the ability to use indicators to show the current position in the CarouselView. You also cited wanting the ability to refresh the CarouselView, along with being able to have more control over the item transitions. Thanks to your feedback, you’ve made these are our top priorities moving forward. While we feel confident about the state of the CarouselView, we plan to place it under its own experimental flag for this release. This will allow us to refine it and iron out any bugs as well as work on providing this desired functionality for a target of Xamarin.Forms 4.4. The ability to use the CarouselView in your apps will still be accessible, though some API changes may occur.

Challenge Highlights

You submitted some truly stand-out carousels spending only four hours on average. Here are some of your best looks:

First off is a submission of Woolworths Money App clone, by Thinh Tran:

A submission by Steven Thewissen is a rework of an older sample which uses a parallax effect by our own Javier Suárez Ruiz.

Lastly, if you’re a fan of hot drinks and fancy animations, you’ll love this one by Javier Suárez Ruiz, using the same parallax effect from above:

These are just a few of our many submissions! Check out all the PRs made by our community contributors if you have the time.

Wrapping Up

For those of you who responded to the survey before the Wednesday 25th deadline, be on the lookout for swag details coming soon. We’ll be sure to hold more of these challenges in the future to gather your feedback. So if you weren’t able to contribute this time, there will be more opportunities to do so in the future.

We really hope that you enjoyed participating! We want to reiterate how significant this feedback is to us in helping to make Xamarin.Forms even better. We’ve just released Xamarin.Forms 4.3.0 on NuGet and encourage you to give it a try. As always, if you have any feedback, please be sure to file an issue on GitHub.
