My history of time is briefer than yours

Raymond Chen
Raymond Chen

In 1999, Eric Schulman published A Briefer History of Time, based upon his previous effort to capture the history of the universe in 200 words. The book takes the initial 200-word summary and expands upon each phrase, surreptitiously teaching you some science among the jokes. (You can even watch a video.) And then this Hawking guy shows up an...

Katamari Damacy: The most screwed-up video game ever

Raymond Chen
Raymond Chen

As I already noted, I went down to Los Angeles a few days before the PDC to spend time with friends and relatives. I stayed with a cousin who works for a major video game manufacturer, and his boss gave him a homework assignment: He was told to go home and play a specific video game. (Unfortunately, it wasn't a particularly good video game, but hi...

Perhaps I like the phrase “withered hand” a bit too much

Raymond Chen
Raymond Chen

Sure, I like saying "withered hand", but Google took this a bit too far and made me the top hit for the phrase , making me more popular than Jesus with respect to that phrase, at least for now. I apologize to all the people looking for the Miracle of the Withered Hand. Fortunately, MSN Search and Yahoo were not fooled.

English Cut: Bringing bespoke tailoring into the general consciousness

Raymond Chen
Raymond Chen

Thomas Mahon's English Cut is a glimpse into the world of bespoke tailoring, a world I was completely unaware of prior to his web site. I was particularly fascinated by his description of how to recognise the work of Anderson & Sheppard by inspecting the pockets. It is this attention to detail that really makes the difference between good and...

The DHS television show was all a scam, it appears

Raymond Chen
Raymond Chen

Xeni Jardin on Boing Boing reports that the DHS series I mentioned a while back was all an elaborate scam to bilk investors out of millions. (One tip-off has got to be that they changed their domain name from www.dhs.tv to www.dhstheseries.tv. And curiously, their "News" page just says .) Read Ms. Jardin's article for more linkity goodness. ...

This is an unsupported ride, so if you stop, you will fall over

Raymond Chen
Raymond Chen

Well, at least I only passed out once. To recap, The E's goaded me into joining them on a ride up Zoo Hill. I'm really not a climber. I'm taxed by the hill on the southbound 520 Trail leading to NE 51st St., so much so that I commute to work along a different route (taking 156th Ave. NE instead) just so I can avoid it. But I accepted thei...

The Double-E Half Hour of Pain

Raymond Chen
Raymond Chen

I'm pretty confident I'm going to regret this. I have been goaded into The Double-E Half Hour of Pain, featuring Eric Gunnerson and The Fat Cyclist. Indeed, Mr. Cyclist has already started the trash talk. My strategy will be to start slow and taper off. (Especially since it will have taken me about an hour and a half just to get to th...

Please disconnect all cell phones, signal watches, and pagers

Raymond Chen

Last Saturday night, a group of us (including butt photographer Wendy) attended a performance of the Seattle Symphony consisting of the world premiere of the orchestral arrangement of Shafer Mahoney's Sparkle, Richard Strauss' Don Quixote (with guest soloist Lynn Harrell) and concluding with Brahms' Fourth Symphony. I was pleasantly surprised by...

Like an invention out of Harry Potter, except that Harry’s would use a quill

Raymond Chen
Raymond Chen

When I heard this story from Swedish Radio, it struck me as the sort of object that would exist in the imaginary world of Harry Potter. Raymond's bad translation follows: Pen can help dyslexics With today's cheaper and cheaper microelectronics, it becomes possible for young inventors to produce new products without a lot of resources. A new i...

Annoying renditions of the songs of Elvis

Raymond Chen
Raymond Chen

Jim Nayder of The Annoying Music Show pops by NPR studios every so often—hey, guys, if you changed the locks, this might stop him—whereupon he tortures the general public with musical offenses that should be outlawed by the Geneva Conventions. Most recently, he offered a series of reinterpretations of the works of Elvis Presley. What'...
