Not certain how Microsoft manages to get the incredible people we do to be our MVPs – but I am very glad we do! Today on a call i mentioned not having time to do blog posts for the new features in Visual Studio Update 1 and one of my MVPs (now one of my favorite MVPs) mentioned she would be happy to help.  By the time i had made it home i had two of these posts in my inbox!  THANK YOU ANNA! ************************************* **Pausing and resuming test execution from the test runner in Microsoft Test Manager **by Anna Russo If you are looking to pause and resume test execution in the test runner this...

Locking and git-tf and… danger?

Charles Sterling

(The other one of Edward’s posts)  ***************************** If you haven't yet seen or heard about the new git-tf tool from Microsoft, this blog post probably won't make any sense.  So...  go check it out over at gittf.codeplex.com.  It's okay, I'll wait. Okay, got it?  Yeah, I know, it's cool, right?  Well, it is, but like any software project, there are a few problems.  One of them is in the whole process and how it needs to take a lock on your tree before it can continue.  I mean, locks are annoying, right?  If git-tf requires a lock to do a checkin, then that's going to fail if somebody else has ...

One of the Team Foundation Server Developers, Edward Thomson, reached out to me this morning: Any way I could get my blog with the fancy new VS 2012 styles? My answer was: “We are only doing this for the team blogs…any reason you aren’t posting to the ALM blog? Turns out he didn’t know to do this…Doh!…Shame on me!  Sounds like I need to send out a another “on boarding email” to the team…In either case I want to welcome Edward Thomson to the ALM Team blog and I copied one of his latest posts below… ********************************************************   Brian Harry announced the availabil...

This post instructs you on how to run an unattended installation of Team Foundation Server, a new feature to TFS 2012.  There is another copy of this post located here, on the TFS Setup, Administration, and Operations blog. **Note: **As nothing in this area has changed for TFS 2013, the title of this document has been amended to encompass the 2013 release as well.   Introduction    What is Unattended Installation?  Unattended install is a feature of Team Foundation Server that lets a user pre-set all configuration parameters for a desired TFS instance in advance.  This allows TFS to be configured from start ...

Network Considerations for TFS Proxy Servers

Charles Sterling

Just had dinner with one of my buddies in TFS and they pointed out a great post by Ed that didn’t make to the team blog: Enjoy! If you are installing a TFS Proxy server on a machine that is configured to automatically receive the proxy settings from your network (this is different than DHCP) you may have connectivity issues when running the TFS Proxy Service as a machine account, such as NETWORK Service.  For servers it is generally recommended that they use pre-configured IP and network Proxy settings (if needed). You can verify this setting on your machine by opening up Internet...

Managing automatic updates for Microsoft Test Manager and Microsoft Feedback Client

In the Visual Studio 2012 Update 1 CTP blog post one of the new test features listed was: Automatic updates for Microsoft Test Manager and Microsoft Feedback Client. Since these user interfaces do not have a the normal File, Edit, Tools, Help menu structure i thought it would be nice to show how this functionality is accessed/changed…     From Microsoft Test Manager you can access the Updates menu from the “Home” screen while displaying either the select Test Plan or change project dialogs. From the Microsoft Feedback Client the Help button is actually a drop down – now with "Product Updates” option. ...
