Open-source developers rejoice! 🙌 PostgreSQL support and MongoDB enhancements announced at Ignite 2022

Microsoft Ignite 2022 kicked off with great news for fans of Azure Cosmos DB and open-source databases. In this morning’s keynote address, CEO Satya Nadella announced the introduction of Azure Cosmos DB for PostgreSQL. This new, generally available feature offers support for native, open-source PostgreSQL. It gives developers the scalability, flexibility, and performance of Azure Cosmos DB, while taking advantage of PostgreSQL’s ACID compliance, rich SQL querying capabilities, and wide range of community extensions. It also makes it faster and easier to develop cloud-native applications such as multi-tenant SaaS solutions using a single service that integrates seamlessly with other Azure managed services for apps, AI, and security. With Azure Cosmos DB for PostgreSQL, Azure becomes the first cloud platform to offer support for both relational and NoSQL data in its own single database service.

Enhanced MongoDB support

Developers who build or modernize apps with Azure Cosmos DB for MongoDB (formerly, “API for MongoDB”) can take advantage of new security and development flexibility enhancements. We’ve introduced role-based access controls, which bring enterprise-grade security and auditability to apps and databases of any size or scale. Plus, we’ve increased the maximum document size to 16MB which makes it easier to migrate and modernize existing MongoDB databases containing larger documents and get the scalability, HA, and elasticity benefits of Azure Cosmos DB.

Industry-leading innovation

Customers have the best insights into the benefits of Azure Cosmos DB for mission-critical applications.  During Ignite, global ecommerce brand ASOS, market insight leader NielsenIQ, and end-of-life planning startup The Postage shared how their teams power cloud-native applications with Azure Cosmos DB.

NielsenIQ offers a revenue management optimization SaaS solution to consumer packaged goods (CPG) customers. The solution uses AI to find optimal pricing to maximize profit for manufacturers and retailers and is powered by distributed relational data in Azure Cosmos DB for PostgreSQL.

ASOS has bet on Azure as their cloud platform of choice to power transformative digital customer experience innovations like real-time personalized product recommendations, powered by Azure Cosmos DB. Most recently, ASOS modernized their order processing solution to take advantage of the benefits of cloud-native development with Azure Cosmos DB and Azure Functions.

Digital-native startup The Postage offers solutions that provide an easy way for people to plan for end-of-life and organize their affairs. The solution was built entirely with Azure cloud technology, and uses Azure Cosmos DB for logging. The team has gained flexibility to find and fix errors, and robust data security. Being able to use enterprise-grade features in their solution has enabled The Postage to grow and ensure the trust of customers.
