I'm A VB: Daron Yondem

Website: http://daron.yondem.com

·        How long have you been using VB?

Basic is my native programming language. Starting from QBasic 1.0 it’s a story of love and excitement. I jumped in the VB world with version 3.0 and the story goes on with 4.0, 6.0. Finally .NET saved us all and now we have one of the most powerful programming languages ever: VB.NET!

·        What industry do you work in?

Software development and consulting. User experience is our special focus, with Silverlight and WPF.

·        How big is your development team?

It depends to the project needs. From one to many, with local and offshore free-lancers / companies. Actually anyone in love with VB!

·        What kind of apps do you most commonly build?

We are developing ASP.NET apps with a lot of Silverlight in them. With the release of Windows 7 we have Multi-touch WPF projects going on. Thanks to VB it goes really smoothly with RAD on every platform.

·        What’s the most interesting app you’ve ever built?

Hard to pick one. Most of the time our customers are the ones who are not able to find solutions around. Each project we have is another challenge. I can’t forget one of our DVD Interface development projects. The customer wanted to have an interface working on Win, Mac and Linux platform and we had just 20 days to build a DVD catalog of 3000 products. The solution we found was a little bit tricky. We build an ASP.NET app generating all the appropriate pages like a DVD interface and build our own crawler to save each page as a linked HTML into the disk. After some tiny performance improvements in our crawler we had a DVD interface working great on any platform.

·        Please tell us about an app that you’re working on at the moment.

We are working on a Multi-touch WPF application for an airline, which will be used as a kiosk app. It will host Virtual Earth 3D, and will have some extra interactivity on it.

·        What other technologies do you most commonly use?

I was using Flash, but with Silverlight now I see no need! I like the way Microsoft builds developer tools, and I’m happy with it.

·        What are some of your favorite VB features?

XML literals ROCK! That’s one of the best features ever! I mean, really, it’s an unbelievable feature!

·        What do you like most about VB as a programming language?

It’s easy to read, easy to write, easy to develop. It’s easy! We are already facing many challenges in our projects. I really don’t need another challenge and VB makes my life easier.
