There are no bugs in the I/O manager

Mark Zbikowski told me a story from the early Windows NT days.

He found a race condition in the file system code and went to see the lead developer for the I/O subsystem.

“There are no bugs in the I/O Manager,” the developer proclaimed.

Mark walked through the scenario to demonstrate the problem.

The lead developer went to his editor and typed furiously for two or three minutes, ending with a theatrical punch of the Enter key.

And he turned to Mark and proclaimed, “There are no bugs in the I/O Manager.”

Raymond has been involved in the evolution of Windows for more than 30 years. In 2003, he began a Web site known as The Old New Thing which has grown in popularity far beyond his wildest imagination, a development which still gives him the heebie-jeebies. The Web site spawned a book, coincidentally also titled The Old New Thing (Addison Wesley 2007). He occasionally appears on the Windows Dev Docs Twitter account to tell stories which convey no useful information.
