PowerShell Spotlight: February 2016

Doctor Scripto

Summary: Microsoft MVP, Teresa Wilson, talks about Windows PowerShell Saturday in this month’s PowerShell Spotlight.

Hello scripters,

I hope everyone had a marvelous weekend and is planning on an awesome week. I have been working on some of the last of the preparations for PowerShell Saturday #010 coming up in less than a month (March 19) in Tampa, FL. There are still seats available, so you have time to register. As a special favor to me, if you plan to attend, the quicker you sign up, the faster I know how many are attending and I can order the correct amount of food.

Here’s a little background (in case you are interested) about how we fund these events…

First of all, the organizers and speakers are all volunteer, no one is being paid to put this together or to come and speak. The costs all evolves from the facility and incidentals. For example, we need insurance to hold an event, and we have general costs such as printing schedules and name tags.

After that we like to provide some things for the attendees, like food and drinks, parking, and giveaways. This is where sponsors and the Eventbrite registration fees come in. We charged 15 dollars for this event and Eventbrite added $1.37 to provide registration service. This means that each attendee is charged $16.37 to attend. Here are the tangible items you get for $16.37:

  • Parking
  • Breakfast, lunch, drinks, and snacks
  • Giveaways

The big giveaway this year is an XBOX One. We will also have some of Ed’s books, Windows PowerShell Step by Step 3rd Edition. Our co-organizer for this event is Blain Barton. I am sure Blain also has some goodies to share.

Last but never least, are our sponsors. So far we have three sponsors and we are talking with a couple more. The sponsor money also goes into the account to pay for everything I previously mentioned.

We have an amazing group of speakers set to share their knowledge with you. I personally want to thank each and every one of them for coming to Tampa and helping with this event. We have speakers coming from Canada, Utah, Wisconsin, Ohio, Georgia, Tennessee, and Florida. Most are either a Microsoft employee, an MVP, or PowerShell User Group leader.

As you probably know, Ed will be speaking and he will share the Keynote spot with Mark Minasi. Mark will also talk about Harvesting the Web in his session. We have several sessions about DSC from beginner to advanced. Will Murphy, Will Anderson, Ashley McGlone, Jason Walker, and Ed will be talking about DSC in various ways and at different levels.

In addition, you can look forward to the following session topics:

  • We have two sessions specifically for beginners about getting started and tackling PowerShell by Will Murphy and Adnan Cartwright.
  • June Blender will talk about versioning.
  • Adam Driscoll brings us classes.
  • Mick Pletcher will talk about SCCM.
  • Sean Kearney will share information about Nano Server.
  • Bill Grauer will talk about Pester
  • Kendal Van Dyke brings us discovery and documentation about SQL Servers
  • Alex Melching talk about PowerShell and Office 365.

You can read the details about all these sessions on the PowerShell Saturday #010 Sessions page.

That is all I have for today. Hope to see you in Tampa.
