In this blog post, Application Development Manager, Lalit Patel, shares some examples of working with Premier to minimize risk and validate environments using RAP as a Service.
Migrating workloads to the Microsoft Cloud (Azure) provides many benefits for our customers. It is also a paradigm shift in how to approach capacity planning and risk management. In this scenario, risk management is primarily associated with ensuring business as usual as on-premises workloads are migrated to a new infrastructure in the public cloud.
Through a Premier Support for Developers relationship, I had the opportunity to work with my customer and manage risk as SharePoint workloads were migrated to Azure Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS). On premises customer environment had number of SharePoint farms built on version 2010. Since the company’s core document management solution is part of this effort and thousands of users across the globe use the solution every day as part of their job, it was of highest importance to understand and mitigate any issues in the new environment.
The Risk Assessment Programs (RAP) from Microsoft Premier Services was chosen to provide assurance to the customer on their environmental health after the infrastructure was built by one of their vendors. RAP as a Service for SharePoint Server is a proactive service delivered by a Microsoft accredited engineer to validate and diagnose potential issues with the environment. As the environment is assessed, solutions for each issues are identified and articulated in the Technical Findings report. Critical and important issues are explained by the Microsoft accredited engineer and a remediation plan is provided as one of the key deliverables. Here is the link to more detailed video walk-through of this service.
The report pointed out several issues on the backend SQL Server and the front end SharePoint WFEs configurations. The vendor team was actively engaged to implement all provided solutions, not only providing confidence to the customer but also enabled the vendor staff to baseline the new environment and measure against future workload migrations and impact. Customers are also provided access to a RAP Assessment tool that can be run at any later time to measure drift from the baseline and validate the fixes once solutions are applied. Below is an example:
This customer team now has a quality gate established by reviewing this report every quarter. This enabled them to measure the overall success of the migrations rapidly and conveniently.
Microsoft Premier Support for Developers further partnered to deliver similar assessments for System Center Operation Manager (SCOM) and System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM) to ensure any risks are mitigated well in time.
