In his latest post, Premier Developer consultant Ron Vincent shares his thoughts on the safety science movement and its impact on the resiliency of a system.
Beyond Lean, another important contributor to DevOps is the safety science movement. In this blog, I’m going to discuss this subject and show how important this is and how it changes the ways we think of the systems we build.
Wikipedia defines safety as “Safety is the state of being ‘safe’ (from French sauf), the condition of being protected from harm or other non-desirable outcomes. Safety can also refer to the control of recognized hazards in order to achieve an acceptable level of risk.” This definition directly implies a focus on when things go wrong. Things are good if there is an acceptably low number of adverse outcomes. This goes perfectly well with the definition from Wikipedia.
