Did you happen to lose something in the Amstel River? Say within the past 500 years?

Did you accidentally drop your Bolta-Hardrubber comb into the river? They found it.

Or your red Pocketline Swing HD1 mobile telephone? They found that too.

Or your keychain? Yup. They found it.

As part of the construction of the North/South metro line in Amsterdam, engineers drained the historic river, and archaeologists cataloged the objects found at Damrak¹ and Rokin.

You can see the results at belowthesurface.amsterdam (English version).

Even the radioactive toothpaste.

Arranged chronologically. Arranged by object type, including a tour of notable objects.

¹ Not to be confused with Darmok, which is something else entirely.

Author

Raymond has been involved in the evolution of Windows for more than 30 years. In 2003, he began a Web site known as The Old New Thing which has grown in popularity far beyond his wildest imagination, a development which still gives him the heebie-jeebies. The Web site spawned a book, coincidentally also titled The Old New Thing (Addison Wesley 2007). He occasionally appears on the Windows Dev Docs Twitter account to tell stories which convey no useful information.
