May marks an important milestone in the SharePoint Framework journey and for the broader Microsoft 365 extensibility ecosystem. Most importantly, we reached general availability of SharePoint Framework 1.23, which represents a key step forward in our continued investment in a modern, stable, and scalable development model for Microsoft 365. This release builds on the foundations we have been evolving over the past releases and sets the stage for the next wave of innovation, especially around AI-powered solutions.
May has been another strong month for connecting with the global community. Events like the European Collaboration Summit continue to bring together developers, partners, and customers to share real-world experiences and practical solutions. These conversations are incredibly valuable in ensuring that SPFx continues to evolve in a way that reflects actual business needs. This is a community-driven journey, and the strength of SPFx is directly tied to your participation and feedback.
At the same time, we continue to be inspired by the community momentum around SPFx. Whether you joined us at events, engaged in discussions, contributed to open source, or shared feedback, your input continues to directly shape the direction of the platform.
SharePoint Framework 1.23 is now generally available
As we shared earlier in May, SharePoint Framework 1.23 has reached general availability. This release focused on strengthening the platform for long-term success by improving developer productivity, modernizing the tooling experience, and expanding extensibility options across Microsoft 365.
A few highlights from this release include:
- Enhanced list extensibility with grouping support for ListView Command Sets, enabling more structured and user-friendly command experiences in lists and libraries
- Preview of the new SPFx CLI, which will evolve how solutions are created and managed, moving towards a more flexible and open model with community-driven templates
- Continued focus on platform quality and security, ensuring that solutions built with SPFx remain reliable at enterprise scale
SPFx continues to be the most widely used extensibility model for building solutions across SharePoint, Microsoft Teams, and Microsoft Viva, with usage at massive global scale.
This release is also an important foundation for what comes next. While 1.23 is focused on stability and readiness, upcoming releases will introduce additional capabilities aligned with modernization and AI.
Looking ahead – AI, Copilot and upcoming investments 💡
As we move forward, our investments are increasingly focused on enabling AI-powered solutions and intelligent experiences across Microsoft 365. In the April update, we shared early signals on upcoming AI-focused capabilities planned for SPFx, with initial experiences targeted for public preview in the upcoming releases. This direction continues to be one of our top priorities in May and during upcoming months.
Our roadmap investments are focused on:
- Enabling developers to build Copilot-ready and AI-enhanced applications
- Simplifying how solutions integrate with Microsoft 365 data and services
- Providing more flexible and modern tooling to accelerate development
- Expanding real-world business scenarios through extensibility
We are evolving SPFx not only as a development model, but as a key foundation for building intelligent, enterprise-ready solutions for the AI era. Here are the current topics in top of our mind within these areas, providing you insights into the upcoming key announcements.
More details will be shared in the coming months as we move these capabilities closer to public preview.
We want your feedback – Spring 2026 feedback survey 👋
As part of shaping the future of SPFx, we are currently running our Spring 2026 feedback survey.
This survey is open until early June and is one of the most impactful ways for you to influence our roadmap. Your feedback helps us prioritize investments, refine existing capabilities, and identify new opportunities.
It only takes a few minutes to respond, but it has a direct impact on what we build next. If something works well, tell us. If something does not, tell us. If you have ideas on what should come next, we want to hear them.
Roadmap 📅
We are evolving towards a quarterly release cycle, providing more predictability on new feature introductions and updates. We will update the public roadmap with any schedule and feature updates as we move forward in this journey.
Here is the set of investments which we are planning to ship within the upcoming SPFx releases:
Version 1.23.1 – June 2026
This release focuses on open sourcing the templates and tooling to create SPFx solutions, enabling our ecosystem to optionally build their own templates. We also want to focus on providing additional value for optimizing developer experience and providing new extensibility options.
- New and edit panel override support for lists and libraries
- Addressing any new npm audit vulnerability issues
Version 1.24 – June 2026
This version continues providing new extensibility options aligned with the future direction of SharePoint. We are also expecting to have other new features and capabilities as part of this release, which will be disclosed a bit later.
- Feature X to public preview (disclosed soon – see AI section for ideas)
- Addressing any new npm audit vulnerability issues
Version 1.25 – September 2026
This version continues providing new extensibility options aligned with the future direction of SharePoint. We are also expecting to have other new features and capabilities as part of this release, which will be disclosed a bit later.
- Feature X to general availability (disclosed soon – see AI section for ideas)
- Navigation customizers – Options to override navigation nodes and/or experiences with SPFx components.
- SPFx CLI general availability (GA)
- Last version of updated SPFx Yeoman generator – SPFx CLI will take over the scaffolding after this release
In top of mind
These are features which are in top of our mind and we want to get them addressed as soon as possible.
- React 18 support for SPFx solutions – In previous communications, our estimate was that this is coming in June 2026. There’s work being actively done on updating the out-of-the-box web parts to the React 18 level. We can only enable it for custom web parts until that work is completed. This might happen by June, but we cannot currently confirm the schedule and are waiting for updates internally.
We encourage you to continue providing feedback to support our product planning for the upcoming semesters. We already have an extensive list of ideas and enhancements in mind but are always interested in your input.
What’s next?
We continue expanding the SharePoint platform to unlock more innovation across Microsoft 365:
- SharePoint Framework (SPFx) for building rich, AI powered and business integrated solutions with custom user interfaces directly in Microsoft 365.
- SharePoint Embedded to bring SharePoint content into your own apps hosted outside of Microsoft 365 with your own user interface.
- Agents and AI to create intelligent, adaptive experiences to access your content and business information efficiently and expose those easily for your end users.
- Microsoft Graph to access data and insights everywhere using our standard API surface.
We encourage you to explore these capabilities and see how they can help you build the next generation of solutions for your organization and customers.
If you are planning to build experiences for Microsoft 365, we strongly recommend joining our community calls and the broader Microsoft 365 and Power Platform Community activities. These cover Microsoft 365 Copilot, Power Platform, SharePoint, Microsoft Teams, Copilot Studio, Microsoft Graph, Microsoft Viva, and more.
