Important updates: GitHub Copilot support ending for JetBrains 2025.1.x

To deliver new features faster and continue improving stability and performance, the GitHub Copilot plugin will end support for JetBrains IDEs version 2025.1.x (JetBrains platform build 251). Focusing on newer IDE versions helps us bring you new capabilities more quickly and maintain a high-quality experience.

Our recommendation: The minimum supported JetBrains IDE version will be 2025.2.x, but we recommend upgrading to version 2026.1 or later and update your GitHub Copilot plugin to continue receiving the latest improvements.

Timeline of deprecation

The GitHub Copilot plugin will discontinue support for JetBrains IDEs version 2025.1.x in the next few months.

Who is affected

This change applies to GitHub Copilot users on JetBrains IDEs version 2025.1.x, including all patch releases in that version family, such as 2025.1.7. If you are using an affected version, we recommend upgrading your IDE to version 2026.1 or later.

What happens if you stay on JetBrains IDEs version 2025.1.x

If you continue using JetBrains IDEs version 2025.1.x after support ends:

• Your existing GitHub Copilot plugin is expected to continue working; this change does not immediately disable it.
• Future GitHub Copilot plugin updates may not be compatible with this IDE version.
• You will no longer receive bug fixes, performance improvements, or new features for this IDE version.

What we recommend

To continue using GitHub Copilot with full support:

1. Check your current IDE version.

   Windows/Linux: Go to Help > About in your JetBrains IDE.

   macOS: Go to [IDE Name] > About [IDE Name] (for example, IntelliJ IDEA > About IntelliJ IDEA).

   The version number will be displayed in the dialog.

2. Upgrade your IDE if you are on version 2025.1.x.

   The minimum supported JetBrains IDE version will be 2025.2.x, but we recommend upgrading to version 2026.1 or later. Visit the JetBrains products and downloads page to find your IDE. If you are already on version 2026.1 or later, you can skip this step.

3. Update the GitHub Copilot plugin.

   After upgrading your IDE, go to Settings > Plugins and check for updates to the GitHub Copilot plugin. Restart your IDE if prompted.

FAQ

Does GitHub Copilot stop working immediately on JetBrains IDEs version 2025.1.x?

No. Ending support does not immediately disable your existing plugin. It is expected to continue working, but version 2025.1.x will no longer receive support or plugin updates after the support-end date.

Why is support being discontinued for version 2025.1.x?

Supporting older JetBrains platform versions limits our ability to deliver improvements and use newer IDE APIs and tooling. Focusing on newer versions helps us improve GitHub Copilot’s features, stability, and performance.
