TFS 2012 Update 1 Hotfix

Brian Harry

*** Updated Jan 14th 2013 *** Some days you just want to crawl in a corner and cry.  We released this patch on Friday to address customer reported issues in Update 1 and over the weekend had a significant bug reported in the patch.  It turns out that if you have TFS installed in a non-default location (like another drive), the patch will not install correctly.  We’ve had 3 or 4 reports of this so far but it’s enough that we’ve decided to pull the patch down, fix this issue and republish it.  It will take a few days to do that.  This patch relies on a set of technolgy we use to produce incremental patches to the product and we use it for all customer requested hotfixes.  On the good side, this is Update 1 patch is the first time we’ve had to provide a fix like this since we shipped TFS 2012.  On the incredibly embarrassing side, it’s another bug on top of the 4 bugs we’re trying to fix and makes us look pretty stupid.  I’m not sure how we managed to make it this far without testing the patching technology on non-default install locations but, somehow we did.  We’ll understand it and make sure we test it in the future.  I appreciate your patience as we work through this.  We will produce a solid update that you can enjoy using.  We are fully committed to that and to learning from this so as to make Update 2 a much better experience. I’ve written a couple of posts about our issues with Update 1 and what we’ve learned from it.  You can get an overview in my retrospective summary.  You can also read about the list of bugs that we’ve found that we feel we should not have missed. As always, we are committed to providing a quality product and we’ll fix the issues short term and we’ll also revisit the process long term to prevent recurrence. The good news, if you can call it that, is that, as far as we know, only about 10 customers have hit the issues I listed.  While 1 customer hitting them is unacceptable, it’s good to know that it’s a pretty small fraction of Update 1 installs that have been affected. Today we are releasing a hot fix that addresses all of the issues I listed – the 4 we introduced in Update 1 and the 1 that we want to fix that was in RTM.  You can download and apply the hotfix here.  You can also read more in the KB article. This install will not be a full reinstall like Update 1 was – it will just update some files on your install and leave all of your configuration in tact.  Also, this update need only be installed on your TFS app tiers.  None of the bug fixes apply to any other TFS or VS components. We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience.
