Tasktop Announces TFS and VS Support for Mylyn

Brian Harry

Last week, at the ALM Summit, Tasktop made 2 exciting announcements.  The first is that they are adding support for TFS to their Mylyn Eclipse plugin.  The second is that they are building a Mylyn plugin for Visual Studio.  This is the first in my series on the ALM ecosystem around Team Foundation Server (ok, the first, not counting the intro post :)). For those who aren’t familiar with Mylyn, it is a work management tool for developers.  It allows developer to track their tasks, associate context with tasks and switch or share tasks and their corresponding context.  For example, if you are working on a bug, you will debug it and explore your code to understand the problem.  In the process, you’ll get a number of open code files, scrolled to interesting places, etc.  This and other stuff is context.  If you send the task to your buddy to look at they can restore all of your context in their IDE and pick up where you left off.  It’s pretty cool. Another aspect of Mylyn is that it has connectors to a lot of other work management systems.  They provide a Task List window that enables users to see their work in all of the various systems that their team uses.  With the new Mylyn support, you’ll be able to get TFS support to.  Here’s what your task list might look like. The Mylyn connector for Eclipse builds on top of our Team Explorer Everywhere plugin and therefore requires that you own Team Explorer Everywhere to use it. As I said, the second announcement is that these Mylyn capabilities are being brought to Visual Studio so that VS users can enjoy the same kinds of context management capabilities. The Mylyn connector for TFS will be available very soon.  The Visual Studio Mylyn support will take a bit longer.  In both cases, I’ll let you know when you can try them out. Thanks,

Brian
