Deploy VDI in Azure Government

Steve Downs

Many of our state, local, and federal customers have asked us to help move their Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) users into Azure Government. Windows 10 in the Marketplace, plus Managed Disks, simplifies your ability to deploy VDI solutions within Azure Government and Citrix provides several options to help you deliver user workloads from the cloud.

Extend your existing Citrix XenApp/XenDesktop environment into Azure Government

Coming soon, you will be able to provision Windows 10 and Server 2016 desktops directly from your on-premises Citrix XenApp/XenDesktop infrastructure into Azure Government. This scenario is an excellent option if you want to deploy desktops in the cloud without migrating your Citrix infrastructure VMs (Delivery Controllers, StoreFront, etc.). Azure Site Recovery lets you protect your on-premises Citrix infrastructure. This option is often referred to as the hybrid approach.

Host in Azure Government

You can also deploy your Citrix XenApp/XenDesktop infrastructure servers and virtual desktops in Azure Government and take your on-premises datacenter completely out of the equation. This is a great option if you are building a new environment and don’t want to split the implementation. It also lets you back your Citrix infrastructure with the high availability provided by Azure Government.

Deploy Desktops into Azure Government from Citrix Cloud

Citrix Cloud is Citrix Software as a Service offering that provides a simplified management approach. Citrix takes care of updating their infrastructure software while you can focus on managing your user images. The ability to provision desktops into Azure Government from Citrix Cloud is currently in tech preview and available for all our customers to evaluate.
