Verify the ISO checksum for Visual Studio 2010 Service Pack 1 before installing

Heath Stewart

While we recommend installing Visual Studio 2010 SP1 using the web download – which only downloads and install those packages needed on your machine – you can also download an ISO for offline use. If you downloaded the ISO for VS2010 SP1 from the Microsoft Download Center or from MSDN Subscriber Downloads, please verify the checksum for the ISO before you install. This can help prevent issues when installing SP1.

The checksums follow.

  • SHA1: 61C2088850185EDE8E18001D1EF3E6D12DAA5692
  • CRC: C77C2A14

To verify the SHA1 hash of the ISO, you can download the File Checksum Integrity Verifier (fciv.exe) described in KB841290. Installing the package will prompt where to extract the utility. Once extracted, you can run the following in a command prompt (example assumes you extracted fciv.exe and downloaded VS2010SP1dvd1.iso to the same directory).

fciv.exe -sha1 VS2010SP1dvd1.iso

This will produce the following output.

//
// File Checksum Integrity Verifier version 2.05.
//
61c2088850185ede8e18001d1ef3e6d12daa5692 vs2010sp1dvd1.iso

If the checksum matches (case-insensitive), your ISO downloaded okay and you can then burn or mount the ISO. If you do burn the ISO, please also enable verification in your burner application. It may take a little more time up front, but may save you more time later.
