Creating Silverlight 3 applications for PHP

Juan Rivera from JCX Software and the developer of VS.PHP has added support for Silverlight 3.  If you’re a PHP developer this is very cool news.

VS.PHP is a plug-in for Visual Studio that brings the rich development environment of Visual Studio to PHP.  In addition to the great intellisense Visual Studio provides for JScript, CSS, HTML, C# and VB, VS.PHP adds instellisense and debugging for PHP applications.   Not only does VS.PHP support Apache but Juan has recently added full support for creating and debugging PHP applications on IIS 7 with fast CGI in VS.PHP 2.6

Now in VS.PHP 2.7 beta Juan has added support for Silverlight 3 beta.  PHP developers can now leverage the richness of Silverlight 3 in their PHP applications.  With VS.PHP 2.7 and Silverlight 3 tooling a developer can have a single solution in Visual Studio that will build and deploy Silverlight 3 applications to a PHP site.  The developer will also be able to simultaneously debug both their PHP and Silverlight 3 applications in the same debugging session.  Very cool!

Check out Juan’s screencast here.

To get started you’ll need Visual Studio Pro SP1 or greater.  If you don’t yet have Visual Studio SP1 you can download the Visual Studio 2008 Professional Edition (90-day Trial).  And then install SP1.

After you have Visual Studio SP1 installed you’ll need to install Silverlight 3 Beta tooling which is included in the Microsoft Web Platform Installer 2.0 Beta and then download VS.PHP 2.7 beta.

This combination is a great example of the richness of the Visual Studio platform and the ecosystem developing around it for web development.
