Get started
To get started with ASP.NET Core in .NET 5.0 install the .NET 5.0 SDK.
If you’re on Windows using Visual Studio, we recommend installing the latest preview of Visual Studio 2019 16.6.
If you’re on macOS, we recommend installing the latest preview of Visual Studio 2019 for Mac 8.6.
Upgrade an existing project
To upgrade an existing ASP.NET Core 3.1 app to .NET 5:
- Update the TargetFramework property to
netcoreapp5.0
- Update all Microsoft.AspNetCore.* package references to
5.0.0-preview.1.20124.5
. - Update all Microsoft.Extensions.* package references to
5.0.0-preview.1.20120.4

That’s it! You should now be all set to use .NET 5.
What’s new?
ASP.NET Core in .NET 5 Preview 1 doesn’t include any major new features just yet, but it does include plenty of minor bug fixes. We expect to announce new features in upcoming preview releases.

Just a quick question .. if I wanted to dowload the VS Preview (to use the Net .5 for Mac) ; is it available; I can only seem to get the EXE version of it.
