This article follows announcement on a previous article that mentioned the end of support for Transport Security Layer (TLS) 1.0/1.1.
TLS 1.3 is the latest version of the internet’s most deployed security protocol, which encrypts data to provide a secure communication channel between two endpoints. Microsoft has implemented updates to enable TLS 1.3 for Azure Cosmos DB.
When will TLS 1.3 support begin?
Effective March 31, 2025, support for TLS 1.3 will be enabled for Azure Cosmos DB.
What issues might TLS 1.3 cause?
If your application relies on an Azure Cosmos DB SDK version between 4.20.0 and 4.40.0 with direct mode connections, and you are using a JRE/JDK version lower than 1.8.0_262, you might experience disruptions. Learn more about TLS 1.3 enablement in Azure Cosmos DB
Required action
To prevent any disruptions due to the rollout of TLS 1.3 support, we recommend Azure Cosmos DB customers using Java update to the latest Cosmos SDK or JRE version.
How to mitigate
- Upgrade Azure Cosmos DB Java SDK to the minimum recommended version.
- We recognize that upgrading to the latest SDK version might not always be feasible. While transitioning your application to the newest SDK, you can address this issue by switching the connection to Gateway Mode. Make sure to thoroughly test the application before deploying it in the production environment.
