Highlights from Azure Cosmos DB Conf 2023!
Azure Cosmos DB Conf returned this year with the exciting launch of a new version of Azure Cosmos DB for MongoDB, and a variety of sessions on how to drive developer productivity, cloud-scale innovation, and cost savings with Azure Cosmos DB. Customers and partners such as Databricks, LinkedIn, and Cazton joined a host of Azure Cosmos DB experts to discuss everything from top ways to save money with Azure Cosmos DB to how to build large-scale multi-tenant SaaS systems. Keynote: Powering modern appdev with Azure Cosmos DB
Kirill Gavrylyuk, general manager of Azure Cosmos DB and PostgreSQL, kicked off the conference with a discussion on the benefits of Azure Cosmos DB, popular use cases, and new updates, including the availability (in preview) of Azure Cosmos DB for MongoDB vCore and upcoming availability of key elasticity features such as burstable capacity and hierarchical partitioning. Kirill showcased how customers, such as Walmart, Music Tribe, and LinkedIn, are building and scaling their apps on Azure Cosmos DB to drive performance and deliver for their customers.
Now in preview: Azure Cosmos DB for MongoDB vCore
We announced that Azure Cosmos DB now offers developers a new database architecture to fit the needs of their MongoDB workloads. With Azure Cosmos DB for MongoDB vCore, developers can easily lift and shift their existing workloads from the cloud or on-prem with little to no code changes or build new applications using the familiar vCore architecture. This update simplifies the migration process, making it effortless to move to Azure Cosmos DB from on-prem or other managed services like MongoDB Atlas. Azure Cosmos DB for MongoDB vCore was designed for MongoDB developers and provides an alternative to the original Azure Cosmos DB for MongoDB throughput Request Unit (RU) architecture. Developer efficiency
Principal Cloud Advocate, Mark Heckler, discussed how to use Spring Boot with Azure Cosmos DB to boost database scaling, without sacrificing performance or flexibility. “You get global scale in a blissful way because the database does the work on your behalf,” noted Mark.
A session on avoiding common pitfalls in writing queries for Azure Cosmos DB for NoSQL, by Sr. Program Manager Justine Cocchi, focused on the tools developers need to write more efficient, effective queries and best practices for optimizing queries to achieve fast performance.
Noah Stahl, software engineer and creator of SkyPlug, took us through how to build a production SaaS product with only Azure Cosmos DB and little else in his talk, “Don’t overcomplicate it: Adventures building SaaS with Azure Cosmos DB.”
Cost savings
Deborah Chen, program manager at Microsoft, discussed how elasticity features such as autoscale, burst capacity, partition merge, and other features can help developers optimize their workloads.
Similarly, in a session on how to unlock cost savings opportunities in Azure Cosmos DB, Microsoft product experts Gary Hope, Emmanuel Deletang, and Tomas Kovarik explored how to optimize RU costs per specific operations by choosing the appropriate indexing, how to choose a partition key and how that impacts query costs, and other simple tools and tricks that everyone has access to for improving cost savings.
Data analytics
Microsoft MVP and RD, and CEO of Cazton Chander Dhall demonstrated real world data modelling use cases based on customer implementations and walked through some performance optimization techniques in terms of request unit usage.
A session on setting up Azure to collect and store data from images using Azure Logic Apps and AI, by Microsoft Sr. Cloud Advocate Brian Benz, used the US Postal System as an example. Brian presented an example that extracts address information from images of physical mail that the post office delivers.
Data modernization
In “Build scalable financial applications with Azure Cosmos DB,” Microsoft technical specialists Sergiy Smyrnov and Marcelo Fonseca discussed app innovation trends and challenges in the financial industry, and showed how to use multiple Azure services – including Azure Cosmos DB and Azure Functions running on Azure Kubernetes Service and KEDA – to build a scalable asset management/trading system solution.
Zach Gardner, Chief Architect at Keyhole Software, discussed how he built a custom solution for hospital call center agents that takes advantage of Azure Cosmos DB and Azure SignalR. The solution helped the agents scale up to meet future business needs with a highly responsive database and little to no code changes.
