We’re excited to share that the Azure Databases extension for Visual Studio Code is now officially rebranded as the Azure Cosmos DB extension!

🎯 Why the Change?

This rebranding is part of our effort to provide dedicated, streamlined tooling for each Azure database service. Similar to our extensions for MongoDB and PostgreSQL, the new Cosmos DB extension is now focused exclusively on Azure Cosmos DB for NoSQL, giving you a faster, simpler, and more optimized developer experience.

✨ What’s in for Azure Cosmos DB for NOSQL?

πŸ’‘Good news: If you’re already using Cosmos DB NoSQL, you don’t need to do anything. The extension will update automatically, and your workflows will continue without interruption.

πŸ—„οΈ What About Other Databases?

If you’re working with other Azure databases which were supported earlier through this extension such as Azure Cosmos DB for MongoDB RU/vCore and Azure PostgreSQL, don’t worry dedicated extensions are available:
  • PostgreSQL: Azure PostgreSQL extension – PostgreSQL for Visual Studio Code is the essential extension for working with PostgreSQL databases – locally or in the cloud. Connect, query, build, and chat with your databases with ease, including seamless Entra authentication for Azure Database for PostgreSQL.
  • DocumentDB: New DocumentDB extension – DocumentDB for VS Code helps you browse, manage, and query DocumentDB and MongoDB databases across any cloud, hybrid, or local environment.
    • ℹ️ If you previously used the Azure Databases extension to interact with MongoDB (RU) or MongoDB (vCore) resources, you’ll experience an automatic transition. You’ll be prompted to install the new DocumentDB extension for Visual Studio Code. Your saved connections will be migrated. There is no interruption to your workflows.
