If you were brave enough to create your own theme, you had to edit elements one by one from an unorganized list of 3,000+ vaguely named color tokens.<\/p>\n<p>This summer, a group of interns has developed a newly released <a href=\"https:\/\/marketplace.visualstudio.com\/items?itemName=ms-madsk.ColorThemeDesigner\">Color Theme Designer<\/a> extension, and we\u2019re hoping that making custom themes just got a whole lot simpler for beginner and advanced designers alike.<\/p>\n<h2>A new theming experience<\/h2>\n<p>Finding and using a new theme is now as easy as downloading any other extension. Just check out the new <a href=\"https:\/\/marketplace.visualstudio.com\/search?target=VS&amp;category=Tools&amp;vsVersion=vs2019&amp;subCategory=Themes&amp;sortBy=Downloads\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Themes<\/a> category in the Visual Studio Marketplace to download themes that other users have published.<\/p>\n<p>For theme designers, the new <a href=\"https:\/\/marketplace.visualstudio.com\/items?itemName=ms-madsk.ColorThemeDesigner\">Color Theme Designer<\/a> comes with a more familiar startup workflow and a simplified design.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-226007\" src=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/visualstudio\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/07\/Picture3.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"3240\" height=\"2080\" srcset=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/visualstudio\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/07\/Picture3.png 3240w, https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/visualstudio\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/07\/Picture3-300x193.png 300w, https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/visualstudio\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/07\/Picture3-768x493.png 768w, https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/visualstudio\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/07\/Picture3-1024x657.png 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 3240px) 100vw, 3240px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re introducing \u2018Quick start,\u2019 a feature that lets you create a custom theme in minutes by picking three base colors. For more specific customizations, the redesigned \u2018Common elements\u2019 and \u2018All elements\u2019 tabs allow you to edit all color tokens individually. The new \u2018Preview\u2019 mode lets you see edits real-time before fully saving and applying your theme. Your final product will be a Visual Studio extension that puts your theme alongside the default themes under <strong>Tools -&gt; Options<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>Let\u2019s create a theme!<\/h2>\n<h3>1. Start customizing<\/h3>\n<p><strong><u>Only got 15 minutes?<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In \u2018Quick start,\u2019 you select three colors which will generate a full palette of shades that set the majority of colors in the theme. A miniature preview displays how the colors will generally appear in Visual Studio.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Want to dive in deeper?<\/u><\/strong><strong>:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u2018Common elements\u2019 has roughly 100 of the most commonly edited color tokens organized under five main categories. Right-clicking tokens gives you the option to modify the hue, saturation, and lightness of the selection. Install your theme<\/h3>\n<p>When you\u2019re finished customizing your theme, click \u2018Apply\u2019 if you\u2019d like to start using it immediately.\u00a0Your theme will appear under Tools -&gt; Options -&gt; General in the Color Themes dropdown alongside the default Visual Studio themes. To remove your theme, go to the Manage Extensions dialog and simply uninstall it like any other extension.<\/p>\n<p>Otherwise, build your theme project and locate. the .vsix file in the project\u2019s output directory (\u2018bin\u2019 folder) to install the theme extension. Use the .vsix file to share your theme with friends or <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/visualstudio\/extensibility\/walkthrough-publishing-a-visual-studio-extension\">publish it<\/a> to the Visual Studio Marketplace!<\/p>\n<h2>In closing<\/h2>\n<p>What do you think of the new Color Theme Designer?
