{"id":1693,"date":"2010-11-30T12:28:00","date_gmt":"2010-11-30T12:28:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.msdn.microsoft.com\/visualstudio\/2010\/11\/30\/color-printing-extension-now-available\/"},"modified":"2022-02-22T08:06:12","modified_gmt":"2022-02-22T16:06:12","slug":"color-printing-extension-now-available","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/visualstudio\/color-printing-extension-now-available\/","title":{"rendered":"Color Printing Extension Now Available!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We are pleased to announce the availability of <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/visualstudiogallery.msdn.microsoft.com\/en-us\/00ec88c2-1553-47d2-8170-3c5baa0c6e44\" title=\"Color Printing on the VS Gallery\" rel=\"noopener\">Color Printing<\/a> as a free extension for Visual Studio 2010!&nbsp; By default, VS 2010 prints only in black and white; this extension restores support for printing code in color.<\/p>\n<h3>Installation and Setup<\/h3>\n<p>Installing <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/visualstudiogallery.msdn.microsoft.com\/en-us\/00ec88c2-1553-47d2-8170-3c5baa0c6e44\" title=\"Color Printing on the VS Gallery\" rel=\"noopener\">Color Printing<\/a> requires Visual Studio 2010 Pro, Premium, or Ultimate (the Express editions do not support extensions).&nbsp; You should be able to simply download and install this extension from the VS Gallery or via the Tools menu-&gt;Extension Manager.<\/p>\n<h3>Using the Color Printing Extension<\/h3>\n<p>Once you&rsquo;ve installed the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/visualstudiogallery.msdn.microsoft.com\/en-us\/00ec88c2-1553-47d2-8170-3c5baa0c6e44\" title=\"Color Printing on the VS Gallery\" rel=\"noopener\">Color Printing extension<\/a>, you should be able to print as you typically would &ndash; simply use File-&gt;Print or press Ctrl+P.&nbsp; No extra steps are required.&nbsp; You might notice that the print dialog looks slightly different, but it should be very similar to print dialogs you would see in Visual Studio or other applications:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/visualstudio\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2010\/11\/3681.image_thumb_5CB779F2-1.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" height=\"424\" width=\"468\" src=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/visualstudio\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2010\/11\/3681.image_thumb_5CB779F2-1.png\" alt=\"Color Printing Dialog\" border=\"0\" title=\"Color Printing Dialog\" style=\"border-right-width: 0px;float: none;border-top-width: 0px;border-bottom-width: 0px;margin-left: auto;border-left-width: 0px;margin-right: auto\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Known Issues<\/h3>\n<p>Although we believe this extension restores most of the color printing functionality available in VS 2008 and earlier, there are a few known issues with this version:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>There is no option to hide collapsed regions.&nbsp; In this version of the color printing extension, collapsed regions are always printed as though they were expanded. <\/li>\n<li>There is no explicit option in the print dialog to print line numbers.&nbsp; In this version, line numbers will be printed if and only if the line number margin is turned on via Tools-&gt;Options. <\/li>\n<li>The margins for the printed page (top\/bottom\/left\/right margins) are not currently customizable. <\/li>\n<li>Printing in high contrast black modes may require users to manually update the background color for Plain Text in Tools-&gt;Options-&gt;Environment-&gt;Fonts and Colors-&gt;Printer.&nbsp; This is because the VS color settings for printers will use the black background color from the high contrast theme.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Feedback<\/h3>\n<p>We&rsquo;re always interested in your feedback on Visual Studio and extensions published by Microsoft.&nbsp; In fact, this extension was created largely in response to your feedback that omitting color printing from VS 2010 was causing significant pain on a daily basis; we hope we&rsquo;ve addressed that pain with this extension.&nbsp; If you have questions or comments about color printing, feel free to post them in the blog comments here.&nbsp; If you find a specific bug in the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/visualstudiogallery.msdn.microsoft.com\/en-us\/00ec88c2-1553-47d2-8170-3c5baa0c6e44\" title=\"Color Printing on the VS Gallery\" rel=\"noopener\">Color Printing extension<\/a>, please <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/connect.microsoft.com\/visualstudio\" title=\"Microsoft Connect | Visual Studio and .NET Framework\" rel=\"noopener\">file a Connect bug report<\/a> so we can investigate in more detail.<\/p>\n<p>Enjoy!<\/p>\n<p>Brittany Behrens <br \/>Program Manager, Visual Studio Editor<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We are pleased to announce the availability of Color Printing as a free extension for Visual Studio 2010!&nbsp; By default, VS 2010 prints only in black and white; this extension restores support for printing code in color.
