Visual Studio 2022 for Mac Preview 2 is now available

Jordan Matthiesen

One month ago, we released the first public preview of Visual Studio 2022 for Mac after an initial private preview. Today, we’re happy to share that Visual Studio 2022 for Mac Preview 2 is now available. The focus of this preview is to support the new .NET 6 Release Candidate 2 (RC2) release on Intel-based Macs.

Visual Studio 2022 for Mac previews can be installed side-by-side with Visual Studio 2019 for Mac and is free to use.

Building apps with .NET 6 RC2

This release includes support for .NET 6 RC2 when installed on Intel-based Macs. For now, .NET 6 RC1 is still installed by default and you need to manually install .NET 6 RC2. Running .NET 6 RC2 in Visual Studio for Mac on the M1 (ARM64) processor architecture isn’t currently supported, and our teams will share out a new update once that is working.

Continuing work on the move to native macOS UI

In our previous blog post we described Visual Studio for Mac’s move to a fully native macOS UI. In Preview 2 we’ve continued this work by porting the existing Test Results window along with a few smaller pieces of the UI. You can read more about these changes, as well as included bug fixes, in the release notes.

Keep sending us your feedback!

Your bug reports are very important to us as we continue to improve the product – please keep those suggestions and problem reports coming! You can use the Help > Report a Problem or Help > Provide a Suggestion menus to share feedback, or go to the Visual Studio for Mac Developer Community site to vote for those that impact you the most.

this version is great, now I can debug NET6 Mac Catalyst csproject.
and The new UI is very fast and smooth.
in terms of Native UI, using AppKit or UIKit (Mac Catalyst)?

Why is VS for Mac so different from the one for windows? It makes really difficult to collaborate within teams when they are completely different.
I’m trying to help a new developer and I can’t find any on Mac.

Is the new version going in opposite directions to the one in windows as well?

When you use Photoshop or any other multiplatform application, they are the same in windows or Mac. Makes learning easier because there are lots of tutorials that work the same in both platforms.

Maybe the team that develops for Mac thinks that the team from windows has done a very bad job and they try to compete and make it better?

    Hi,

VS4Mac 2019 has had at least the possibility to build library projects even if they defined ..-windows (for example net5.0-windows) as target framework (WPF projects have been thrown an error every time). For this, in the csproj file of the project following has to be defined:

In VS4Mac 2022, the exact same project isn’t possible to build anymore, “The Windows platform is not supported by Visual Studio”. Also for library projects. Yeah, I know that WPF won’t be supported by VS4Mac, but I hoped that at least developing on macOS could be possible now (running only in Windows). Is there anything that I can define in csproj that at least building is possible or is anything be planned in future to support WPF development (!) for windows platforms with VS4Mac? Would be so great not to use the virtual machine for development anymore, only for testing purposes…
