ยท        How long have you been using VB?

I jumped in with Access 1.0 in 1993 then converted a couple of apps from VB 1.0 to 3.0 in 1995 or so. Previously used the Microsoft Basic interpreter on the Altair 8800 which came on paper tape in 1975/76.

ยท        What industry do you work in?

Whichever  industry wants to pay my bills. Over the 15 years of having my own company have touched almost every industry.

ยท        How big is your development team?

At one time grew to 20 but now there is just a couple of us plus whatever I work with at customers. Typically less than 5.

ยท        What kind of apps do you most commonly build?

Mostly web applications and windows services to do back end automation.

ยท        Whatโ€™s the most interesting app youโ€™ve ever built?

I think the most interesting I worked on was a vision inspection system for a glass factory. They put in sand and a lot of heat at one end, extracted a continuous ribbon from a molten tin bath and then a multi-camera vision inspection system detected flaws in the glass sheet and controlled spray markers down the line to mark the defects which then determined where the sheet cuts would occur.

ยท        Please tell us about an app that youโ€™re working on at the moment.

Integration of a call center with a cloud based  dialer system via web services. Forcing myself to use Entity Framework to see what it’s limits are.

ยท        What other technologies do you most commonly use?

I live and breathe SQL serverโ€ฆ Transact SQL is my second language.

ยท        What are some of your favorite VB features?

On occasion I have to use C# which is a fine language but I find the case sensitivity can easily lead to stupid errors that  just don’t happen in VB.

I like the continuous compile, it makes tracking down errors very easy.

IntelliSense is the best, it  makes searching through millions of combinations a breeze.

ยท        What do you like most about VB as a programming language?

With Visual Studio it’s just easy and simple to use with minimum hassle. I know I can start a new project and target any kind of application that can be written for Windows.
