Heath Stewart

As announced on Soma’s blog, Visual Studio 2005 Service Pack 1 Beta is available today. You can sign up to download the beta and receive more information about what was fixed. Shortly after you complete the survey to sign up you’ll receive an email with a link to the download page where more information – including related KB articles – will be available.

Readers have noticed that Visual Studio 2005 does work okay on Vista, but there are a few issues. One issue is that when installing the product or the service pack, setup may fail. During internal testing some custom actions failed when installing or patching the product because some custom actions weren’t marked to not impersonate. I’ll describe the problem and resolution in more detail in a separate post, but if you’re going to install Visual Studio 2005 SP1 on Vista you should do so as the actual Administrator; otherwise, a small handful of custom actions will impersonate your unprivileged user token when UAC is enabled and may fail like when modifying the environment script, such as sdkvars.bat.

I would also like to point out a new Knowledge Base article based on a previous post, KB925336. If you see the error message like “Error 1718.File D:WINDOWSInstaller50baad.msp was rejected by digital signature policy.”, please follow the instructions in the KB article.

Please be sure to submit feedback on both your installation experience as well as bugs within the product. If you’re looking to see if a specific bug was fixed you can also search the feedback center to view current status.
