Today I am going to call the variable <strong>XMLDocument<\/strong> to make the script easier to read. I use the [xml] type accelerator to cast the text into an <strong>XMLDocument<\/strong> object. The following image shows the document I am going to work with in XML Notepad:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2019\/02\/hsg-6-12-14-02.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2019\/02\/hsg-6-12-14-02.png\" alt=\"Image of menu\" title=\"Image of menu\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>When looking around at the properties that are available for working with XML documents, I like to use the MSDN reference for <a href=\"http:\/\/msdn.microsoft.com\/en-us\/library\/System.Xml.XmlDocument(v=vs.110).aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">XMLDocument Class<\/a>. I keep it open in Internet Explorer on one of my monitors so it will be available if I need it.<\/p>\n<p>From looking at the document in XML Notepad, I can see that the root node is called <strong>Users<\/strong>, and that each child node is called <strong>User<\/strong>. Beneath that, I can find the <strong>UserName<\/strong> and the <strong>Address<\/strong> nodes. So how does this work in the Windows PowerShell console?<\/p>\n<p>The first thing I do is read in the XML file, cast it to <strong>XMLDocument<\/strong>, and store it in a variable. For example, if I did not know that <strong>Users<\/strong> was at the root of the XML document, I could have used <strong>ChildNodes<\/strong> there.
