{"id":5995,"date":"2017-02-03T19:53:51","date_gmt":"2017-02-03T19:53:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.msdn.microsoft.com\/premier_developer\/?p=5995"},"modified":"2019-02-14T20:27:41","modified_gmt":"2019-02-15T03:27:41","slug":"the-high-availability-conversation-part-1-introduction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/premier-developer\/the-high-availability-conversation-part-1-introduction\/","title":{"rendered":"The High Availability Conversation Part 1: Introduction"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In this post, Senior Consultant,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sqlballs.com\/\">Bradley Ball <\/a>discusses High Availability for SQL Server.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>In this latest blog post PSfD Consultant Bradley Ball begins the High Availability Conversation based off of a question on Twitter.\u00a0 He answers the questions what do the Three Bears have to do with HA planning and the business users and IT management.\u00a0 Let\u2019s define a couple terms up front.\u00a0 HA in this case is High Availability.\u00a0 It is the capability for a database or data store to maintain availability and connectivity to a Graphical User Interface, Web Service, or some other data consuming application despite a localized outage or failure of the primary system.<\/p>\n<p>High Availability is different from Disaster Recovery, or DR.\u00a0 Disaster Recovery is required when a disaster, natural or man-made, prevents the use of resources within a data center and the hardware within to support regular business processes.\u00a0 In this blog, we will be addressing HA only as that was what Kenneth had asked about.<\/p>\n<p>A keen understanding of how business logic translates into technology workflows requires both IT and business leaders making the right decisions together.\u00a0 Over this series he\u2019s going to give you a couple examples on when HA was needed.\u00a0 Some in which HA was not.
