At Microsoft, the term <i>tenet<\/i> is used as a generalization of what we previously called <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.msdn.com\/b\/oldnewthing\/archive\/2005\/08\/22\/454487.aspx\"> <i>taxes<\/i><\/a>: Things that everybody has to do in order to be a good software citizen.<\/p>\n<p> While <i>taxes<\/i> are typically very low-level and specific, like supporting <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.msdn.com\/oldnewthing\/archive\/2005\/06\/30\/434209.aspx\"> roaming user profiles<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/windows.microsoft.com\/en-US\/windows-8\/multiple-monitors\"> multiple monitors<\/a>, <i>tenets<\/i> are broader concepts like <i>reliability<\/i> or <i>compatibility<\/i> or <i>API design and documentation<\/i>. <\/p>\n<p> The word doesn&#8217;t escape the halls of Microsoft very often. Most of the citations I have are internal, but here&#8217;s a case where Jon DeVaan let it slip into a keynote address: <\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"q\"><p> And together we&#8217;ve improved reliability on Vista huge amount. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/news\/exec\/ssinofsky\/11-05winhec08.aspx\"> And when you look at the compatibility tenet<\/a> that we have for Windows&nbsp;7, all of this work translates immediately to the reliability of Windows&nbsp;7 on day one. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p> Occasionally, somebody will confuse the word <i>tenet<\/i> with the superficially-similar <i>tenant<\/i>. <\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"q\"><p> We still have many bugs marked as <i>High tenant impact<\/i>. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p> Remember: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><i><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.msdn.com\/b\/oldnewthing\/archive\/2013\/04\/15\/10410966.aspx\">tenant<\/a><\/i>: Somebody who is renting from you. <\/li>\n<li><i>tenet<\/i>: An important principle or belief. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p> <b>Bad pun alert<\/b>: I guess a bug could be high tenant impact if it&#8217;s a bedbug or lice. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In standard English, a tenet is a fundamental belief held by a group of people.
