{"id":43593,"date":"2014-11-18T07:00:00","date_gmt":"2014-11-18T07:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.msdn.microsoft.com\/oldnewthing\/2014\/11\/18\/file-version-information-does-not-appear-in-the-property-sheet-for-some-files\/"},"modified":"2014-11-18T07:00:00","modified_gmt":"2014-11-18T07:00:00","slug":"file-version-information-does-not-appear-in-the-property-sheet-for-some-files","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/oldnewthing\/20141118-00\/?p=43593\/","title":{"rendered":"File version information does not appear in the property sheet for some files"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\nA customer reported that file version information\ndoes not appear on the Details page of the property sheet\nwhich appears when you right-click the file and select\n<i>Properties<\/i>.\nThey reported that the problem began in Windows&nbsp;7.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThe reason that the file version information was not appearing\nis that the file&#8217;s extension was <code>.xyz<\/code>.\nOlder versions of Windows attempted to extract file version information\nfor all files regardless of type.\nI believe it was Windows Vista that changed this behavior\nand extracted version information only for known file types\nfor Win32 modules,\nspecifically\n<code>.cpl<\/code>,\n<code>.dll<\/code>,\n<code>.exe<\/code>,\n<code>.ocx<\/code>,\n<code>.rll<\/code>,\nand\n<code>.sys<\/code>.\nIf the file&#8217;s extension is not on the list above,\nthen the shell will not sniff for version information.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nIf you want to register a file type as eligible for file version\nextraction, you can add the following registry key:\n<\/p>\n<pre>\n<b>HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\n \\Software\n  \\Microsoft\n    \\Windows\n      \\CurrentVersion\n        \\PropertySystem\n          \\PropertyHandlers\n            \\<i>.XYZ<\/i><\/b>\n             (Default) = REG_SZ:\"{66742402-F9B9-11D1-A202-0000F81FEDEE}\"\n<\/pre>\n<p>\n(Thanks in advance for complaining about this change in behavior.\nThis always happens whenever I post in the Tips\/Support\ncategory about how to deal with a bad situation.\nMaybe I should stop trying to explain how to deal with bad situations.)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A customer reported that file version information does not appear on the Details page of the property sheet which appears when you right-click the file and select Properties.
