{"id":37803,"date":"2004-09-21T07:01:00","date_gmt":"2004-09-21T07:01:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.msdn.microsoft.com\/oldnewthing\/2004\/09\/21\/swedes-struggle-with-the-meaning-of-sick-leave\/"},"modified":"2004-09-21T07:01:00","modified_gmt":"2004-09-21T07:01:00","slug":"swedes-struggle-with-the-meaning-of-sick-leave","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/oldnewthing\/20040921-00\/?p=37803\/","title":{"rendered":"Swedes struggle with the meaning of sick leave"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As part of the continuing campaign to shed their hard-working stereotype, perhaps <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.msdn.com\/oldnewthing\/archive\/2004\/07\/27\/198411.aspx\"> taking a cue from their more well-adjusted Norwegian neighbors<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/story.news.yahoo.com\/news?tmpl=story&amp;u=\/nm\/20040917\/od_nm\/sweden_sickness_dc\"> Swedes have been taking dubious sick leave in record numbers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"q\"><p>  [A] study showed 40 percent believe it is enough to feel tired to stay home and draw benefits.  <\/p>\n<p> A survey of 1,002 Swedes by the board also showed 65 percent believed they could go on sick leave if they felt stressed at work and 41 percent thought a conflict with their boss or workmates was a good enough reason.  <\/p>\n<p> One fifth thought a strike at the child care center also made them eligible for the benefits and 71 percent said family problems entitled them always or sometimes to sick leave. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p> Reuters claims <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dn.se\/\">Dagens Nyheter<\/a><\/i> as the source, but if you punch &#8220;Anna Hedborg&#8221; into DN:s search engine, asking for articles within the last week, it finds nothing. But if you ask Google, the article is right there: <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dn.se\/DNet\/jsp\/polopoly.jsp?a=320915\">Tr&ouml;tta sjukskriver sig<\/a><\/i> (<i>The tired call in sick<\/i>). Once again, Google finds a web page that the site itself cannot. <\/p>\n<p> On a somewhat related note, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sr.se\/ekot\/artikel.asp?artikel=473711\"> a different type of sick-leave abuse has been detected<\/a>. <\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"q\"><p>  According to the Social Insurance Board, several people  have been drawing sick-leave pay for several years, while simultaneously working another job and receiving unemployment benefits. <\/p>\n<p> Some cases are of ordinary people who defraud the Board in small amounts but over a long period of time.
