\nLet’s see how well these geniuses fared. I sat down and\nimplemented their brilliant suggestions since I am myself\nnot a genius.\n<\/P>\n

\nFrom left to right, the effects are as follows:\n<\/P>\n
- \n
- Solid background + text. (This is what Windows uses.)\n
- Black text, no effects. (As a baseline.)\n
- Xor.\n
- Simple drop shadow, drawing black at (+1,+1), black at (0,0)\n then white at (0,0).\n
- One-pixel wide outline.\n
- Two-pixel wide outline.\n
- 50% alpha.\n<\/UL>\n
\nTo my untrained eye, the only readable ones are the first one\nand the “two-pixel wide outline” (which nobody suggested but which\nI just made up). The enormously popular Xor is completely useless.\n<\/P>\n
\nOf course, all but the first three are expensive operations,\nrequiring multiple drawing passes,\nso they are unsuitable for the “high performance” drawing\nscenario that I described in the original article.\n<\/P>\n
\nTherefore, the only drawing method that looks good and is also fast\nis the first one. And it so happens that’s what Windows uses\nwhen it needs to be fast.\n<\/P><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
