servername\n<\/p>\n<p>\nbut another server showed up &#8220;where the server name is parentheses\nand the node name is in front.&#8221;\n<\/p>\n<p>\n&#x229e; nodename (servername)\n<\/p>\n<p>\n&#8220;Where is Explorer getting that information,\nand why are the two servers showing up in different ways?&#8221;\n<\/p>\n<p>\nIt&#8217;s all in the server comment.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nFrom the command line, you can view the server comment by\ntyping\n<code>net view \\\\servername<\/code>.\nFor example,\n<\/p>\n<pre>\nShared resources at \\\\servername\n<u>Printer server next to the third floor bathroom<\/u>\nShare name  Type  Used as  Comment\n----------------------------------\n...\n<\/pre>\n<p>\nYou can set the comment with the command line\n<\/p>\n<pre>\nnet config server \/srvcomment:\"Printer server next to the third floor bathroom\"\n<\/pre>\n<p>\nIf a server has a comment,\nthen the comment is shown to the user on the expectation that the\ncomment is something that is more meaningful to the user than some\ncryptic server name.\nMicrosoft&#8217;s own server names are hyper-cryptic, like\nTK5EX14MBXW603.\nOf course if you talk to a support technician,\nthey&#8217;ll tell you that the name is clear as day.\n&#8220;The TK means that the server is physically in our Tukwila data center.\nThe 5 means that&#8230;&#8221; (I never manage to stay awake long enough to\nlearn what the 5 stands for.)\n<\/p>\n<p>\nI guess this created more confusion than clarification,\nbecause the comment-name-followed-by-parenthesized-server-name\nconvention appears no longer to be in use starting in Windows Vista.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<b>Communications breakdown<\/b>:\nWhen we provided this information back to the customer,\nthe customer liaison simply replied back,\n&#8220;Thanks, we figured that out on our own.&#8221;\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThat was not a very clear reply.\nIs the customer liaison saying,\n&#8220;That&#8217;s the information we were looking for, thanks.\nWe managed to figure that out on our own in the meantime.&#8221;\nOr maybe the customer liaison was trying to say\n&#8220;Thanks for the information,\nbut we already knew that.\nWe were looking for something else.&#8221;\n<\/p>\n<p>\nI asked the customer liaison whether they needed any more\ninformation from us,\nand there was no reply.\nI guess that&#8217;s passive-aggressive way of saying, &#8220;No.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A customer wanted to know why Explorer showed one of their servers in the folder list the normal way: &#x229e;
