{"id":35793,"date":"2005-04-25T09:01:49","date_gmt":"2005-04-25T09:01:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.msdn.microsoft.com\/oldnewthing\/2005\/04\/25\/welcome-to-millennium-tower-due-for-completion-in-may-2005\/"},"modified":"2005-04-25T09:01:49","modified_gmt":"2005-04-25T09:01:49","slug":"welcome-to-millennium-tower-due-for-completion-in-may-2005","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/oldnewthing\/20050425-49\/?p=35793","title":{"rendered":"Welcome to Millennium Tower, due for completion in May 2005"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/spaces.msn.com\/members\/thewendyhouse\/\"> The friend who<\/a> brought to my attention the <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.msdn.com\/oldnewthing\/archive\/2004\/05\/10\/129069.aspx\"> guide to British pub etiquette<\/a> reports that Portsmouth&#8217;s Millennium Tower, centerpiece of the Millennium Project, is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/southampton\/webcams\/spinnaker_tower.shtml\"> still not finished<\/a>, due for completion (scroll to the end of the article) in May 2005.\n To disguise the embarrassment, they&#8217;ve renamed it to Spinnaker Tower, thereby&mdash;as the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hago.org.uk\/\">Hampshire Area Guitar Orchestra<\/a> describes it&mdash;replacing <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hago.org.uk\/2000\/popup\/forget-2.html\"> a name that no-one could quite remember how to spell correctly, with a name that no-one can quite remember how to spell correctly<\/a>&#8220;.\n If you go back <a href=\"http:\/\/www.portsmouth.gov.uk\/living\/752.html\"> to the original proposal<\/a>, construction was to begin in Winter 1998 with completion in Autumn 1999. In reality, the project was so badly delayed that construction didn&#8217;t even begin until 2003 (I believe). Quite an embarrassment to what was supposed to be &#8220;Millennium City&#8221;. (At least it&#8217;s no longer home to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rmaz.co.uk\/tricorn.html\">Tricorn Carpark and Shopping Centre<\/a>, named <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/1\/hi\/magazine\/3561069.stm\"> Britain&#8217;s ugliest building<\/a>.)\n <a href=\"http:\/\/www.millennium-city.co.uk\/\"> If you go to the project&#8217;s home page<\/a>, you can catch up on everything that&#8217;s going on, or at least pretend to, because the &#8220;News Update&#8221; and &#8220;The Projects&#8221; links are both 404.<\/p>\n<p> But that&#8217;s okay, because there&#8217;ll be &#8220;More Deatils Soon&#8221;. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The friend who brought to my attention the guide to British pub etiquette reports that Portsmouth&#8217;s Millennium Tower, centerpiece of the Millennium Project, is still not finished, due for completion (scroll to the end of the article) in May 2005.
