{"id":33743,"date":"2005-10-17T10:00:10","date_gmt":"2005-10-17T10:00:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.msdn.microsoft.com\/oldnewthing\/2005\/10\/17\/the-undeletable-outlook-folder\/"},"modified":"2005-10-17T10:00:10","modified_gmt":"2005-10-17T10:00:10","slug":"the-undeletable-outlook-folder","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/oldnewthing\/20051017-10\/?p=33743","title":{"rendered":"The undeletable Outlook folder"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><P>\nFor a while, I&#8217;ve had a few &#8220;undeletable Outlook folders&#8221;.\nEven after deleting all the messages from them, Outlook just\ncomplains when I try to delete them.\nThere was some sort of error message, but of course\n<A HREF=\"http:\/\/blogs.msdn.com\/oldnewthing\/archive\/2003\/09\/01\/54734.aspx\">\nI didn&#8217;t read it<\/A>.\nThe only option was OK, so I clicked it.\nAs I recall,\nthe message said something about &#8220;Can&#8217;t delete\nbecause blah blah pending synchronization blah blah.&#8221;\nI don&#8217;t know what &#8220;pending synchronization&#8221; is, but\nit must be important if Outlook won&#8217;t let me delete a folder\nbecause of it.\n<\/P>\n<P>\nMeanwhile,\nI also noticed that my Sync Issues folder grew by about a dozen\nerror messages every day, and I had to go clean them out every\nso often.\nThe messages looked something like this:\n<\/P>\n<BLOCKQUOTE CLASS=\"m\">\n<PRE>\n9:26:59 Synchronizer Version 11.0.6352\n9:26:59 Synchronizing Mailbox &#8216;Raymond Chen&#8217;\n9:26:59 Synchronizing local changes in folder &#8216;0618&#8217;\n9:26:59 Error synchronizing folder\n9:26:59\t\t [80004005-501-4B9-0]\n9:26:59\t\t The client operation failed.\n9:26:59\t\t Microsoft Exchange Server Information Store\n9:26:59\t\t For more information on this failure, click the URL below:\n9:26:59\t\t <A HREF=\"http:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/support\/prodredirect\/outlook2000_us.asp?err=80004005-501-4b9-0\">http:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/support\/prodredirect\/outlook2000_us.asp?err=80004005-501-4b9-0<\/A>\n9:27:00 Synchronizing local changes in folder &#8216;0611&#8217;\n9:27:00 Error synchronizing folder\n9:27:00\t\t [80004005-501-4B9-0]\n9:27:00\t\t The client operation failed.\n9:27:00\t\t Microsoft Exchange Server Information Store\n9:27:00\t\t For more information on this failure, click the URL below:\n9:27:00\t\t <A HREF=\"http:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/support\/prodredirect\/outlook2000_us.asp?err=80004005-501-4b9-0\">http:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/support\/prodredirect\/outlook2000_us.asp?err=80004005-501-4b9-0<\/A>\n9:27:01 Done\n<\/PRE>\n<\/BLOCKQUOTE>\n<P>\nI clicked the link to obtain further information, but the \ninstructions there didn&#8217;t solve my problem.\nI just chalked this up to &#8220;Outlook gets that way sometimes,&#8221;\nand ignored the messages, since they didn&#8217;t seem to be hurting me.\nI had almost resigned myself to carrying these two undeletable\nfolders with me until I die.\n<\/P>\n<P>\nThen today I randomly stumbled across the solution.\n<\/P>\n<P>\nI right-clicked one of the &#8220;stuck&#8221; folders\nand selected &#8220;Clear Offline Items&#8221;,\neven though there were no offline items in the folder.\n(I deleted all the messages from it; the folder was empty.\nHow do you clear something that is empty?)\nI got a warning dialog that said something like,\n&#8220;Hey, there&#8217;s some unfinished synchronization here,\ndo you want to clear the items anyway?&#8221;\nI said, &#8220;Go for it.&#8221;\n<\/P>\n<P>\nAnd then Outlook let me delete the folder.\n<\/P>\n<P>\nMy guess is that Outlook&#8217;s synchronization engine got wedged up\non these two folders because there was some unfinished business that\nit just couldn&#8217;t reconcile,\nand it said, &#8220;Eh, maybe it&#8217;ll work tomorrow,\nbut in the meantime, don&#8217;t delete it yet. I&#8217;m still working on it.&#8221;\nRepeat for several months, because tomorrow never comes.\nBy telling Outlook, &#8220;Oh just give up already, trust me, I don&#8217;t care\nany more,&#8221;\nthe synchronization engine released its objections to deleting the folder\nand let me finally wipe it out.\n<\/P>\n<P>\nIf you have a mysteriously undeletable folder, you could try this,\nsee if it helps.\n<\/P>\n<P>\nUpdate: I just hit the problem again.  The error message is\n<\/P>\n<BLOCKQUOTE CLASS=\"m\">\nOutlook hat die Synchronisierung der lokalen\n&Auml;nderungen an Elementen in diesem Ordner noch nicht abgeschlossen.\nDer Order kann erst nach Abschluss der Synchronisierung mit dem Server\ngel&ouml;scht werden.\n<\/BLOCKQUOTE>\n<P>\nYes, I run Outlook in German.  This translates to\n&#8220;Outlook has not yet completed the synchronization of local changes\nto items in this folder.\nThe folder can only be deleted after completion of the synchronization\nwith the server.&#8221;\n<\/P>\n<P>\nThis time, deleting the offline items wasn&#8217;t good enough.\nEven though the Properties dialog says\n&#8220;Server folder contains: 0 items&#8221;\nand\n&#8220;Offline folder contains: 0 items&#8221;,\nI nevertheless had to trigger a manual synchronization to reconfirm\nthat zero equals zero before it\nwould let me delete the folder.\n<\/P>\n<P>\n(Watch, people are now going to start sending me Outlook product\nsupport questions.\nHey, I don&#8217;t work on Outlook.\nI&#8217;m a hapless victim like you!)\n<\/P><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For a while, I&#8217;ve had a few &#8220;undeletable Outlook folders&#8221;.
