{"id":33073,"date":"2005-12-06T10:00:11","date_gmt":"2005-12-06T10:00:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.msdn.microsoft.com\/oldnewthing\/2005\/12\/06\/humanitys-greatest-invention-according-to-seventh-grade-students\/"},"modified":"2005-12-06T10:00:11","modified_gmt":"2005-12-06T10:00:11","slug":"humanitys-greatest-invention-according-to-seventh-grade-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/oldnewthing\/20051206-11\/?p=33073","title":{"rendered":"Humanity&#8217;s greatest invention, according to seventh grade students"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boingboing.net\/2005\/12\/04\/essay_contest_what_i.html\"> I read<\/a> that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theecologist.org\/\">Ecologist Magazine<\/a> is co-sponsoring <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theecologist.org\/offer2.asp\"> an essay contest on the topic <i>What is Humanity&#8217;s worst Invention?<\/i><\/a>, it reminded me of a related essay exercise assigned to seventh-graders by a friend of mine. The students (typically thirteen years of age) were given the topic <i>What is humanity&#8217;s greatest invention or discovery?<\/i> Here are some of the greatest inventions and discoveries of all time, according to these students:<\/p>\n<table>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"padding-right: 1em\">pencils<\/td>\n<td style=\"padding-right: 1em\">airplanes<\/td>\n<td style=\"padding-right: 1em\">vaccines<\/td>\n<td>refrigerators<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"padding-right: 1em\">pets<\/td>\n<td style=\"padding-right: 1em\">craftsman tools<\/td>\n<td style=\"padding-right: 1em\">steam engines<\/td>\n<td>iPods<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"padding-right: 1em\">alarm clocks<\/td>\n<td style=\"padding-right: 1em\">laptops<\/td>\n<td style=\"padding-right: 1em\">shoes<\/td>\n<td>transportation<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"padding-right: 1em\">computers<\/td>\n<td style=\"padding-right: 1em\">microbes<\/td>\n<td style=\"padding-right: 1em\">medicine<\/td>\n<td>microphones<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"padding-right: 1em\">tomatoes<\/td>\n<td style=\"padding-right: 1em\">cars<\/td>\n<td style=\"padding-right: 1em\">light bulbs<\/td>\n<td>batteries<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"padding-right: 1em\">fire<\/td>\n<td style=\"padding-right: 1em\">hair products<\/td>\n<td style=\"padding-right: 1em\">toilets<\/td>\n<td>spear tips<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td colspan=\"2\" style=\"padding-right: 1em\">marrying a princess<\/td>\n<td colspan=\"2\">incandescent light<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n<p> Some sentences written in support of these claims: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> The invention of the light bulb has literally shed light on the world. <\/li>\n<li> The first car ever invented was the Mercedes around the early 1800s. <\/li>\n<li> You might have to actually wash the plates (without electricity). <\/li>\n<li> The car was first invented by Harrison Ford. <\/li>\n<li> the one thing that makes nerds drool when they here [sic] it&#8217;s [sic] name:  videogames <\/li>\n<li> We all know that IPODS have a great deal of greatness. <\/li>\n<li> A light bulb comes with a switch to turn it off. <\/li>\n<li> All they had to eat was tin biscuits. <\/li>\n<li> What if someone discovers a machine to make you love forever? You couldn&#8217;t have that without electricity! <\/li>\n<li> The light bolb helps in menny dirfpeant ways. <\/li>\n<li> This realy cool pen could wright and use the couckulater <\/li>\n<li> Wagons can have horses pull them while riding in them. <\/li>\n<li> It can be used for evel porpoises such as bombs. <\/li>\n<li> Thomas Edison was a very smart, experimental man. <\/li>\n<li> Cars make it possible for people to have space time. <\/li>\n<li> Without electricity, housework would take all day! <\/li>\n<li> The computer has easily beat out the dog in the man&#8217;s best friend race these days. <\/li>\n<li> The riders are throwing themselves off cliffs and hitting trees.  These are happy people. <\/li>\n<li> The catskane will be even more helpful in the furter. <\/li>\n<li> Many school assignments would be close to impossible, or even cancelled if computers were never invented. <\/li>\n<li> The airplane was invented by the Write brothers. <\/li>\n<li> When the austronaughts go up into the bitch black space. <\/li>\n<li> Without these things (electricicity) there wouldn&#8217;t be a AC\/DC or Led Zeppelin and that would be torture. <\/li>\n<li> If you forgot to make your mom a birthday cake, you would need a light bulb to read the recipe <\/li>\n<li> Back then the only domesticated animals were calvary, poultry and livestock. <\/li>\n<li> Cars are good because they are the fastest way in and out for the C.I.A. <\/li>\n<li> The tomato, I believe is a harmless fruit that has been around for hundreds of years. <\/li>\n<li> When the cavemen were around they probably didn&#8217;t stress good hygine, but they did likely emphasize beauty. Cavemen and women used bones from animals as hair rollers or ornaments and used animal fat for gel in their hair. <\/li>\n<li> If you open your heart to a cat and love it forever, it will eventually love you back. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p> That last one is my favorite.
