Things break, that&#8217;s to be expected. The screen which normally guides you through the selection process instead displayed an error message.<\/p>\n<table style=\"color: #FFFFC0\" bgcolor=\"gray\">\n<tr>\n<td><tt>Service required<\/tt><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><tt>* Brewer error *<\/tt><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n<p> The problem was not that it was out of coffee; when that happens, a much more specific error is displayed. Something like, um, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.msdn.com\/oldnewthing\/archive\/2006\/08\/07\/690946.aspx\">Out of coffee<\/a>&#8220;. No, this time, there was some sort of weird internal error that prevented the machine from working. Fortunately, this was only one machine in a two-machine cluster, so the second machine could assume the extra load without interrupting service.\n This didn&#8217;t stop people from making jokes about it, though. Attached to the machine was a note that read<\/p>\n<table style=\"border: dotted .75pt black\" bgcolor=\"#FFFFC0\" cellpadding=\"20\">\n<tr>\n<td><a href=\"http:\/\/msdn.microsoft.com\/library\/en-us\/debug\/base\/getlasterror.asp\">gle<\/a>=109<br \/>ERROR_BROKEN_PIPE<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n<p> Another joker wrote<\/p>\n<table style=\"border: dotted .75pt black\" bgcolor=\"#FFFFC0\" cellpadding=\"20\">\n<tr>\n<td align=\"center\">Java runtime<br \/>failure<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n<p> Computer programmers think they&#8217;re so clever.<\/p>\n<p> (Meanwhile, <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.msdn.com\/msampson\/archive\/2006\/12\/28\/whistle-blowing-starbucks-coffee-is-part-placebo.aspx\"> Matt Sampson is not convinced that everything that comes out of the coffee machine is actually coffee<\/a>.) <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last year, one of the fancy-dancy iCup devices (yes that&#8217;s its name, I kid you not) in the kitchen of my building went on the fritz.
