{"id":24463,"date":"2007-11-19T10:00:01","date_gmt":"2007-11-19T10:00:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.msdn.microsoft.com\/oldnewthing\/2007\/11\/19\/darkon-a-larping-documentary\/"},"modified":"2007-11-19T10:00:01","modified_gmt":"2007-11-19T10:00:01","slug":"darkon-a-larping-documentary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/oldnewthing\/20071119-01\/?p=24463","title":{"rendered":"Darkon: A Larping Documentary"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>My friend <a href=\"http:\/\/wendyhome.com\/\"> ::Wendy::<\/a> has many circles of friends, and several of them converged at the <a href=\"http:\/\/elephantcastle.com\/content\/locations\/seattle\"> Elephant and Castle Pub<\/a> in Seattle last week <a href=\"http:\/\/wendyhome.com\/2007\/10\/31\/repatriating-to-reading-berkshire\/\"> for her send-off party<\/a>, resulting in a night-long game of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Venn_diagram\"> Venn Diagram<\/a> as you tried to work out which groups intersected how.\n I got to meet in person some of ::Wendy::&#8217;s blogger friends, including <a href=\"http:\/\/liscious.net\/piehole\/\"> Jennifer<\/a> (aka &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.msdn.com\/oldnewthing\/archive\/2005\/11\/02\/488164.aspx\">Piehole<\/a>&#8220;) and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dharmajunkie.com\/\"> LaCroix<\/a> (not her real name), the person who <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.msdn.com\/oldnewthing\/archive\/2007\/01\/24\/1521926.aspx\"> tipped me off to Yaktrax<\/a> earlier this year. Jennifer in real life is pretty much exactly like her blog persona: boistrous and hilariously outrageous. LaCroix was a surprise: Although her writing appears methodical and subdued, in person, she&#8217;s intensely energetic and charismatic. Once you start talking with her, you somehow just <i>want<\/i> to be her friend. It&#8217;s no wonder that she has her own <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dharmajunkie.com\/2007\/11\/01\/jeudi-le-1-novembre\/\"> Cafeteria Boyfriends<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p> At some point during the evening, I mentioned the movie <a href=\"http:\/\/www.darkonthemovie.com\/\"><i>Darkon<\/i><\/a>, a documentary on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.darkon.org\/\"> Darkon Wargaming Club<\/a>, a band of Live Action Role Playing aficionados, known perhaps pejoratively as <i>larpers<\/i>. We were all fascinated by the idea of the movie (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/id\/2177830\/\">Grady Hendrix of <i>Slate<\/i> calls it a &#8220;must-see&#8221;<\/a>), but alas it doesn&#8217;t appear to be showing in the Seattle area.
