{"id":21263,"date":"2008-08-12T10:00:01","date_gmt":"2008-08-12T10:00:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.msdn.microsoft.com\/oldnewthing\/2008\/08\/12\/the-unwritten-rule-of-riding-a-seattle-metro-bus\/"},"modified":"2008-08-12T10:00:01","modified_gmt":"2008-08-12T10:00:01","slug":"the-unwritten-rule-of-riding-a-seattle-metro-bus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/oldnewthing\/20080812-01\/?p=21263","title":{"rendered":"The unwritten rule of riding a Seattle Metro bus"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/transit.metrokc.gov\/\"> Metro King County transit site<\/a> has all the facts about <a href=\"http:\/\/transit.metrokc.gov\/tops\/bus\/howride.html\"> how to ride the bus<\/a>, but there&#8217;s another rule that is applied by convention rather than by any formal codification:<\/p>\n<p> For some reason, and I see this only in Seattle, it is customary to say <i>Thank you<\/i> to the bus driver as you get off the bus. <\/p>\n<p> <b>Tip for new riders<\/b>: If you aren&#8217;t familiar with the area, you can <a href=\"http:\/\/transit.metrokc.gov\/tops\/accessible\/calloutstops\/helping.html\"> ask the bus driver to announce the stop you intend to get off at<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p> <b>Bonus tip for bicyclists<\/b>: There is an experimental program running this summer to allow bicyclists to <a href=\"http:\/\/transit.metrokc.gov\/tops\/bike\/bike-520demo.html\"> ride out-of-service buses across the 520 bridge for free<\/a>. You have to get on at Evergreen Point and get off at Montlake (or vice versa). This is in addition to the existing policy of allow bicyclists to <a href=\"http:\/\/transit.metrokc.gov\/tops\/bike\/i-520.html\"> ride out-of-service buses across the bridge (paying the normal fare)<\/a>, eastbound as far as 51st St, assuming the bus is heading that way.
