For example, if you took in $30 and paid out $20, then your net is $10.\n In Microspeak, this term has moved into project planning and has undergone redoubling, so it&#8217;s not just <i>net<\/i>; it&#8217;s <i>net net<\/i>. The doubling of the word was probably added to create a sense of impatience. Here&#8217;s an imaginary conversation that illustrates the term:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"q\"><p> <b>Speaker&nbsp;1<\/b>: We&#8217;re five days over on component&nbsp;X,     but component&nbsp;Y is ahead of schedule, and we can have some     of them h&#8230; <\/p>\n<p><b>Speaker&nbsp;2<\/b>: (interrupting) What&#8217;s the <i>net net<\/i>? <\/p>\n<p><b>Speaker&nbsp;1<\/b>: Um, we&#8217;re two days behind. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p> The <i>net net<\/i> is not <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Net_lease#Double_net_lease\"> a real estate transaction<\/a> but rather is a short summary of a complicated situation, what often goes by the term <i>bottom line<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p> Here is an actual citation: <\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"q\">\n<p>(At the top of a long email message)<\/p>\n<p>Net net, we&#8217;re delaying the release we had planned for tomorrow to try and get some critical fixes in. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p> Another use of the term <i>net net<\/i> is to highlight a conclusion from a lot of data. <\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"q\">\n<p>(at the bottom of a large information-dense PowerPoint slide)<\/p>\n<p>Net Net: Eliminate XYZ from our target set. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p> Both senses of <i>net net<\/i> highlight the principle of <i>I know you&#8217;re impatient, so I&#8217;ll cut to the chase<\/i>. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In finance, the net is the total after you have cancelled positive values against negative values.
