The Microsofties viewed the IBM engineers as <a title=\"Be careful with that thing, it's a confidential coffee maker\" href=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/oldnewthing\/20220426-00\/?p=106528\"> mired in corporate policy<\/a>, whereas the IBM engineers viewed their Microsoft counterparts as a bunch of undisciplined hackers.<\/p>\n<p>At a team meeting in Redmond, Steve Ballmer (then head of the Platform division) recognized one of my colleagues in the back of the room\u00b9 who had previously worked as an intern at IBM. He asked, &#8220;You used to work at IBM, right?
