The Korean friend said, &#8220;Hey, y&#8217;know, I actually speak some Chinese.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>His friend demonstrated by raising his arm and pointing vaguely forward, shaking his hand slightly, and saying &#8220;Nugga nugga nugga nugga nugga\u2026&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This is hilarious if you speak Mandarin, because what he&#8217;s saying is &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/%E9%82%A3%E5%80%8B\">\u90a3\u500b<\/a>\u90a3\u500b\u90a3\u500b\u90a3\u500b\u90a3\u500b\u2026&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The word &#8220;\u90a3\u500b&#8221; literally means &#8220;that&#8221; in the sense of &#8220;that object over there.&#8221; But in Mandarin Chinese, it is a common <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Filler_(linguistics)\"> filler word<\/a>, used to stall for time while you hunt for the correct word.
