{"id":102638,"date":"2019-07-02T07:00:00","date_gmt":"2019-07-02T14:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/oldnewthing\/?p=102638"},"modified":"2019-07-02T01:15:15","modified_gmt":"2019-07-02T08:15:15","slug":"20190702-00","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/oldnewthing\/20190702-00\/?p=102638","title":{"rendered":"Microspeak: Ingestion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The term <i>ingestion<\/i> refers to the process of taking code from one project and incorporating it into another project.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"q\"><p>This PR ingests the .NET Framework 4.8 reference assemblies and other collateral into the Windows build.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Here is a public citation:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"q\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/Microsoft\/xlang\/pull\/193\"> This update<\/a> includes the final C++\/WinRT project structure in preparation for OS ingestion for an upcoming Windows SDK (and the OS build itself).<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Ingestion takes many forms. It could be a source code drop. It could be a binary drop of a <a href=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/oldnewthing\/20171114-00\/?p=97396\"> foreign checked-in binary<\/a>. It could be upgrading the toolchain (ingesting a new compiler). It could be changing the NuGet references. It could be upgrading the Windows SDK. For hosted services or embedded systems, it could be upgrading the operating system.<\/p>\n<p>The term <i>ingestion<\/i> is used from the point of view of the project receiving the new code. The receiving project <i>ingests<\/i> the donor project.
