{"id":25551,"date":"2026-05-01T10:45:01","date_gmt":"2026-05-01T17:45:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/microsoft365dev\/?p=25551"},"modified":"2026-05-01T10:57:50","modified_gmt":"2026-05-01T17:57:50","slug":"sponsor-group-type-requirements-for-agent-identities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/microsoft365dev\/sponsor-group-type-requirements-for-agent-identities\/","title":{"rendered":"Sponsor group type requirements for agent identities"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As part of moving to general availability (GA) for Entra Agent ID, agent blueprints, agent blueprint principals, and agent identities only accept <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">dynamic membership groups<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and\u00a0<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Microsoft 365 groups<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> as group-type sponsors.\u00a0In addition, <strong>r<\/strong><\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ole-assignable groups <\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">were supported during the Agent ID public preview but aren&#8217;t included in the GA release. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Why we&#8217;re making this change<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Sponsors are a critical attribution mechanism in Agent ID. When an admin or automation queries &#8220;who is responsible for this agent?&#8221; or &#8220;which\u00a0agents\u00a0is this user responsible for?&#8221;, the sponsor relationship must resolve\u00a0quickly and reliably\u00a0to ensure a good experience.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We&#8217;re making these changes to ensure the best performance while still enabling customers to use groups as sponsors of their Agent ID objects. Dynamic membership groups and Microsoft 365 groups are optimized for the patterns that sponsors require. By narrowing the supported set, we ensure that these operations remain fast and predictable as Agent ID adoption grows.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">What this means for you<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">New sponsor assignments<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0must use dynamic membership groups or Microsoft\u00a0365 groups. Attempts to assign other group types as sponsors will be rejected.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Existing sponsors<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> from other group types that are already set on your agent identities or blueprints continue to function. No customer action is required.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Individual users<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0remain fully supported as sponsors, with no changes.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Recommended action and next steps<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">If your current workflows assign fixed-membership security groups or role-assignable groups as sponsors, transition to dynamic membership groups or Microsoft 365 groups before your next provisioning cycle. We also listen to customer feedback and will evaluate the priority of supporting role-assignable groups in the future.
