{"id":2746,"date":"2020-03-19T10:05:59","date_gmt":"2020-03-19T17:05:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/directx\/?p=2746"},"modified":"2020-05-27T12:34:49","modified_gmt":"2020-05-27T19:34:49","slug":"directx-12-ultimate-getting-started-guide","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/directx\/directx-12-ultimate-getting-started-guide\/","title":{"rendered":"DirectX 12 Ultimate Getting Started Guide"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">So, you\u2019re a developer sold on the next-gen features in <a href=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/directx\/announcing-directx-12-ultimate\/\">DirectX 12 Ultimate?<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Look no further than this little guide!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>1) OS<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">The complete set of DirectX 12 Ultimate features is be available in the next retail version of Windows 10, version 2004 (also called the Windows 10 May 2020 Update).<\/span><\/p>\n<p>As of 5\/27, you can get this version of Windows by following <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.windows.com\/windowsexperience\/2020\/05\/27\/how-to-get-the-windows-10-may-2020-update\/\">these instructions<\/a>. This is recommended for most developers.<\/p>\n<p>We also wrote a handy guide on how a developer can use a <a href=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/directx\/use-vhd-to-accelerate-directx-12-development\/\">VHD (Virtual Hard Disk) for DirectX development<\/a>. Using a VHD allows setting up temporary OS versions to test new features on, which can then easily be thrown away or replaced as needed, kind of like the PC equivalent of an Xbox devkit.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>2) Visual Studio<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Once you have the latest Windows 10 build, install <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visualstudio.com\/downloads\">Visual Studio 2019<\/a> onto it (Note that the free Community Edition will work if you don\u2019t already have the Professional or Enterprise editions)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>3) Windows 10 SDK, version 2004\n<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Download and install the Windows 10 SDK, version 2004.
