This feature has been a <a href=\"https:\/\/developercommunity.visualstudio.com\/t\/add-the-ability-to-filter-boards-by-custom-fields\/606538\">long-standing request<\/a> from the developer community, and we\u2019re eager to get it into customers\u2019 hands early through a private preview.<\/p>\n<p>Today, filter options are limited, hardcoded, and can vary slightly depending on the page you\u2019re viewing.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/devops\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2026\/01\/blog-filters-1.webp\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/devops\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2026\/01\/blog-filters-1.webp\" alt=\"blog filters 1 image\" width=\"1601\" height=\"166\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-72356\" srcset=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/devops\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2026\/01\/blog-filters-1.webp 1601w, https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/devops\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2026\/01\/blog-filters-1-300x31.webp 300w, https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/devops\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2026\/01\/blog-filters-1-1024x106.webp 1024w, https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/devops\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2026\/01\/blog-filters-1-768x80.webp 768w, https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/devops\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2026\/01\/blog-filters-1-1536x159.webp 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1601px) 100vw, 1601px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>With this new feature, you\u2019ll continue to start with the same default filters you\u2019re used to. In addition, you can now open the filter settings and add any field that is already displayed on backlog columns or Kanban cards.<\/p>\n<p><video controls width=\"600\"><source src=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/devops\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2026\/01\/Video-Project-1.mp4\" type=\"video\/mp4\"\/>Your browser does not support the video tag.<\/video><\/p>\n<p>Once you apply your changes, the selected fields immediately become available in the filters control.<\/p>\n<h2>\ud83d\udd0a Limitations<\/h2>\n<p>There are a few limitations you should be aware of.<\/p>\n<h4>Fields<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Large text fields are not supported<\/li>\n<li>Fields that always contain unique values, such as <code>Stack Rank<\/code>, are not available<\/li>\n<li>Fields must be added as a backlog column or card field to be available as a filter<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Sharing behavior<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>If you share a filtered URL and the recipient does not have the same fields configured as filters, those fields will be ignored. To resolve this, add the field as a filter and open the URL again.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Page support<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>This feature is currently available only on backlog and board pages<\/li>\n<li>It is not yet supported on sprint backlogs, sprint boards, query results, or the work items hub<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>\ud83d\ude4b Private preview process<\/h2>\n<p>If you\u2019d like early access to this feature, please <a href=\"mailto:dahellem@microsoft.com\">send me an email<\/a> with your organization name in the format of <code>dev.azure.com\/{organization}<\/code>. Once enabled, the feature will be available to all users within that organization.<\/p>\n<p>We plan to accept organizations into the private preview until <strong>February 6, 2026<\/strong>. After that date, we will close enrollment to focus on collecting feedback, addressing issues, and validating the experience with those preview customers. Our intent is to incorporate what we learn and move quickly toward general availability.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re excited to move this feature through private preview and into general availability.
