{"id":483,"date":"2014-11-10T03:30:00","date_gmt":"2014-11-10T03:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.msdn.microsoft.com\/visualstudioalm\/2014\/11\/10\/how-to-install-rm-azure-extension-and-use-the-azure-vm-in-release-management\/"},"modified":"2022-05-26T05:01:00","modified_gmt":"2022-05-26T13:01:00","slug":"how-to-install-rm-azure-extension-and-use-the-azure-vm-in-release-management","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/devops\/how-to-install-rm-azure-extension-and-use-the-azure-vm-in-release-management\/","title":{"rendered":"How to install RM Azure extension and use the Azure VM in Release Management"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: small\">RM extension enables PowerShell DSC and WMF configuration required for Release Management Server to perform actions on the VM.\u00a0 By installing RM Extension to Azure VM, the user can add this VM as a vNext Azure Server in Release Management once the corresponding Azure subscription added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small\">Steps to install Visual Studio Release Management Azure extension and to use the VM in Release Management.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small\">First, you&#8217;ll need a Microsoft Azure account to create your VMs. If you don&#8217;t have one yet, sign up <span style=\"color: #008080\"><a href=\"http:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/en-us\/pricing\/free-trial\/\"><span style=\"color: #008080\">here<\/span><\/a><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: small\">1. After creating Azure VM from <span style=\"color: #008080\"><a href=\"https:\/\/portal.azure.com\/\"><span style=\"color: #008080\">Azure management portal<\/span><\/a><\/span>, browse to the VM and click on Extensions.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small\"><a href=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/devops\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2014\/11\/2656.1.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/devops\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2014\/11\/2656.1.png\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: small\">2. Click on Add Extension.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small\"><a href=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/devops\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2014\/11\/2110.2.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/devops\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2014\/11\/2110.2.png\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: small\">3. Select\u00a0Visual Studio Release Management from the list of extensions and click on\u00a0create.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small\"><a href=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/devops\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2014\/11\/1362.3.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/devops\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2014\/11\/1362.3.png\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small\">Once you are done with installing RM extension to the VM,go to the Release Management server and add the subscription to proceed withusing the VM.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: small\">4. Add the\u00a0details for your Azure subscription to Release Management.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small\"><a href=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/devops\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2014\/11\/8802.4.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/devops\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2014\/11\/8802.4.jpg\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small\"><span style=\"color: #008080\"><a href=\"https:\/\/manage.windowsazure.com\/publishsettings\"><span style=\"color: #008080\">Download the settings<\/span><\/a><\/span> file from the Azure portal to get your subscription ID and Management Certificate key. Go <span style=\"color: #008080\"><a href=\"https:\/\/manage.windowsazure.com\/microsoft.onmicrosoft.com#Workspaces\/StorageExtension\/storage\"><span style=\"color: #008080\">here<\/span><\/a><\/span> to get the name of an existing storage account or add a new storage account using the Azure portal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small\"><a href=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/devops\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2014\/11\/0830.5.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/devops\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2014\/11\/0830.5.png\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: small\">5. Create a\u00a0vNext Azure environment for each stage in your release path.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small\"><a href=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/devops\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2014\/11\/3482.6.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/devops\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2014\/11\/3482.6.png\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: small\">6. Link your\u00a0Azure environment in Release Management to the Azure subscription that you\u00a0entered.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small\"><a href=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/devops\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2014\/11\/4762.7.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/devops\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2014\/11\/4762.7.png\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small\">Select the Azure subscription that you want to use withthis environment. (Sometimes it takes a few minutes to load your subscription.)The Azure cloud services for this subscription are displayed. Select a cloudservice to link the subscription to the environment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small\"><a href=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/devops\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2014\/11\/6371.8.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/devops\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2014\/11\/6371.8.png\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small\">If there are no\u00a0cloud services\u00a0for your Azuresubscription, you cannot link it\u00a0to the environment. Go to the Azureportal and create a VM for this subscription. When you create a VM, a cloudservice with the same name is created by default.\u00a0Refresh to select thiscloud service.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: small\">7. Link your\u00a0Azure VMs in the cloud service as servers\u00a0for the environment.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small\"><a href=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/devops\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2014\/11\/3554.9.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/devops\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2014\/11\/3554.9.png\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small\">Select the servers that you want\u00a0to link.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small\"><a href=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/devops\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2014\/11\/4048.10.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/devops\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2014\/11\/4048.10.png\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: small\">8. For each\u00a0server, you can add configuration variables that can be used by your\u00a0deployment actions. <\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: small\">For example, you can add username and password here.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small\"><a href=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/devops\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2014\/11\/6560.11.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/devops\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2014\/11\/6560.11.png\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small\">If you add configuration variables with the same name for actions in your release template, the values in any actions will override the values that you set here.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: small\">9. View the\u00a0environments that you created in the environments tab.
