{"id":36605,"date":"2017-10-16T10:37:48","date_gmt":"2017-10-16T10:37:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.msdn.microsoft.com\/devops\/?p=36605"},"modified":"2019-02-14T15:51:05","modified_gmt":"2019-02-14T23:51:05","slug":"wiki-to-turn-wiki-many-exciting-features","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/devops\/wiki-to-turn-wiki-many-exciting-features\/","title":{"rendered":"Wiki* to turn Wiki &amp; many exciting features"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It has been 3 months since <a href=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/devops\/33855\/\">Wiki went live<\/a> and thanks to your feedback, we believe this is the right time to remove <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/vsts\/collaborate\/preview-features\">preview<\/a>\u00a0tag from Wiki.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wiki*<\/strong> will be <strong>Wiki<\/strong> in the coming days.<\/p>\n<p>I would like to give a shout out to everyone in the <a href=\"https:\/\/developercommunity.visualstudio.com\/spaces\/21\/index.html\">developer community\u00a0<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/visualstudio.uservoice.com\/forums\/330519-visual-studio-team-services\/category\/210055-wiki\">VSTS user voice<\/a>, and those who reached out to us with their feedback to make VSTS better.<\/p>\n<h2>What does it mean for Wiki* to be Wiki?<\/h2>\n<p>Once Wiki is not in preview, it will be enabled by default on all accounts. You will not be able to view\u00a0Wiki under <strong>Preview features<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<span>enable or disable\u00a0it\u00a0in your user account menu.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/devops\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2017\/10\/wikiPreview.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"560\" height=\"312\" class=\"size-full wp-image-36615 aligncenter\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If you still have the old wiki extension installed, you may end up seeing two <strong>Wiki<\/strong> tabs\u00a0in the top navigation bar. There is no functional impact of having two tabs called Wiki however it may confuse users. Therefore it is recommended to <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/vsts\/collaborate\/migrate-extension-wiki-pages\">migrate pages from the old Wiki extension to VSTS Wiki<\/a>, if you haven&#8217;t done it already.<\/p>\n<h2>New features<\/h2>\n<p>I also want to talk about few features that we have shipped recently.<\/p>\n<h3>Refer work items in Wiki<\/h3>\n<p class=\"lf-text-block lf-block\">Now you can <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/vsts\/notifications\/add-links-to-work-items\">reference work items in wiki pages.<\/a>\u00a0Press &#8216;#&#8217; to get a list of the most recently accessed work items or work items assigned to you. Select the work item of interest and refer the work item in a wiki page. This is particularly useful while writing release notes, epics, or specs pages in Wiki.<\/p>\n<p class=\"lf-text-block lf-block\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/devops\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2017\/10\/refer-work-item.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1620\" height=\"675\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-36635\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"paste-rich-content-as-html\" class=\"\">Paste rich content as HTML<\/h3>\n<p class=\"lf-text-block lf-block\">You can now paste rich text in the markdown editor of<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>Wiki<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>from any browser-based applications such as Confluence, OneNote, SharePoint, work online, or mediawiki. This is particularly useful for those who have created rich content such as complex tables and want to show it in<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>Wiki<\/strong>. Simply copy content and paste it as HTML.<\/p>\n<p class=\"lf-text-block lf-block\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/devops\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2017\/10\/pasteasHTML.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1142\" height=\"498\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-36636\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"preview-content-as-you-edit-wiki-pages\" class=\"\">Side by side edit\/preview<\/h3>\n<p class=\"lf-text-block lf-block\">Data shows that users <strong>Preview<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>a wiki page multiple times while editing content. On average, for each page edit, users click on<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>Preview<\/strong><span>\u00a0at least\u00a0<\/span>2 times. This results in a slow and sub-optimal edit experience and can be particularly time consuming for those new to markdown. You <a href=\"https:\/\/visualstudio.uservoice.com\/forums\/330519-visual-studio-team-services\/suggestions\/31217455-side-by-side-end-and-preview-views-on-wiki\">wanted a simplified preview experience <\/a>therefore Wiki now supports a side by side edit and preview experience that can help you to\u00a0preview your page while editing in markdown.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"filter-text-highlighting\" class=\"\">Ctrl+S to save Wiki page<\/h3>\n<p class=\"lf-text-block lf-block\">We heard <a href=\"https:\/\/visualstudio.uservoice.com\/forums\/330519-visual-studio-team-services\/suggestions\/20207905-wiki-keyboard-shortcuts-ctrl-s\">you wanted a quicker and easier way to save a Wiki page<\/a>. Now you can simply press Ctrl+S keyboard shortcut to save a page with a default revision message and continue editing. If you&#8217;d like to add a custom revision message just click on the chevron next to the save button.<\/p>\n<p class=\"lf-text-block lf-block\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/devops\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2017\/10\/CTRLS.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"271\" height=\"127\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-36626\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"enable-wiki-home-page-to-show-on-the-project-description-page\" class=\"\">Enable Wiki home page to show on the Project description page<\/h3>\n<p class=\"lf-text-block lf-block\"><strong>Wiki<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>has rich formatting and layout capabilities, like HTML support and in-line videos. You <a href=\"https:\/\/visualstudio.uservoice.com\/forums\/330519-visual-studio-team-services\/suggestions\/31528447-wiki-as-an-alternative-to-readme-md\">wanted to host wiki pages on project description page <\/a>and now you can leverage these capabilities to create beautiful project description pages by choosing to show the wiki home page on the<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>Project<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>description page.<\/p>\n<p class=\"lf-text-block lf-block\"><em>Change the file on project description page<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"lf-text-block lf-block\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/devops\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2017\/10\/changeProDesc.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"798\" height=\"296\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-36675\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"lf-text-block lf-block\"><em>Select Wiki homepage to display on project description page<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"lf-text-block lf-block\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/devops\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2017\/10\/setWikiHomepage.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"636\" height=\"518\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-36685\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Filter text highlighting<\/h2>\n<p class=\"lf-text-block lf-block\">Filtering the page tree view in<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>Wiki<\/strong><span>\u00a0highlights the\u00a0<\/span>text searched to give a clear picture of the text matches. e.g. in the results below it is easy to visually identify that &#8216;mark&#8217; appears in 3 pages under the parent page &#8216;VS.in Social Documents&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"lf-text-block lf-block\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/devops\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2017\/10\/filter-highlighting.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"331\" height=\"180\" class=\"size-full wp-image-36625 aligncenter\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"move-page-in-wiki-using-keyboard\" class=\"\">Move page in Wiki using keyboard<\/h3>\n<p class=\"lf-text-block lf-block\">Earlier in<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>Wiki<\/strong>, you could not reorder or re-parent pages using keyboard. This made moving pages within wiki, inaccessible to those who prefer using keyboard. Now you can reorder pages by using <strong>Ctrl + Up<\/strong> or <strong>Ctrl + Down<\/strong>\u00a0shortcuts. You can also re-parent pages by clicking<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>Move page\u00a0<\/strong>in the context menu of a page and selecting the new parent page to move to.<\/p>\n<p class=\"lf-text-block lf-block\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/devops\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2017\/10\/movepage.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"485\" height=\"554\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-36645\" \/><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"enable-wiki-home-page-to-show-on-the-project-description-page\">Did you know?<\/h2>\n<p>Now for my favorite &#8211; did you know section.<\/p>\n<h3>Create pages from broken links<\/h3>\n<p>Did you know that you can create broken links in a wiki page and later click on the broken links to create pages.<\/p>\n<p><em>Create broken links<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/05\/create-broken-links.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/devops\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2017\/10\/create-broken-links.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1028\" height=\"239\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-36715\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Click on the broken links to create page<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/devops\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2017\/10\/confusedrobot.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"471\" height=\"378\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-36705\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This helps you to formulate a table of content without creating a page.
