In this post, I\u2019ll show you how to start quickly and try out <strong>Microsoft Dev Box<\/strong> using either a <strong>Microsoft 365 <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/microsoft-365\/business\/microsoft-365-business-premium?activetab=pivot:overviewtab\"><strong>Business Premium<\/strong><\/a> or <strong>Microsoft 365 <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/microsoft-365\/enterprise\/e3?activetab=pivot:overviewtab\"><strong>E3<\/strong><\/a> plan \u2014 both of which come with licenses of Windows 10\/11, Microsoft Entra ID, and Microsoft Intune and offer free trials. Check out my other <a href=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/develop-from-the-cloud\/microsoft-dev-box-subscriptions-and-licensing-requirements-demystified\/\">post<\/a> about subscriptions and licensing requirements for Microsoft Dev Box to understand what subscriptions and licenses are required to successfully get started with the Microsoft Dev Box service.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Microsoft Dev Box<\/strong> provides secure, ready-to-code cloud-based workstations with enterprise-grade configuration and controls. In order to follow along with the steps in this post, you\u2019ll need four things:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\u2705 A Microsoft 365 Business Premium or E3 plan (<strong>Both plans offer a 30-day free trial<\/strong>)<\/li>\n<li>\u2705 Microsoft Intune license (included in both plans)<\/li>\n<li>\u2705Microsoft Entra ID license (included in both plans)<\/li>\n<li>\u2705 A Microsoft Azure subscription (Pay-as-you-go subscription)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>\ud83e\udded In this post<\/h2>\n<p>In this post, I will show you all the major steps you will need to take to create a Dev Box machine. You will start with signing up for a Microsoft 365 Business premium or E3 subscription, sign up for a pay-as-you-go Azure subscription, and then create a Dev Box machine in the <a href=\"https:\/\/devbox.microsoft.com\/\">developer portal<\/a>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Step 1: Sign up for Microsoft 365 Business Premium or E3<\/li>\n<li>Step 2: Sign up for an Azure subscription<\/li>\n<li>Step 3: Configure and set up Microsoft Dev Box<\/li>\n<li>Conclusion<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>\ud83d\udee0\ufe0f Step 1: Sign up for Microsoft 365 Business Premium or E3 plan<\/h2>\n<p>Both these plans offer <strong>30-day free trials for up to 25 users. <\/strong>\u00a0Windows 10\/11, Microsoft Intune, and Microsoft Entra ID licenses, which are required for setting up the Dev Box service, are included with both these plans.<\/p>\n<h3>1.1 Start the free trial<\/h3>\n<p>\ud83d\udc49 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/microsoft-365\/business\/compare-all-microsoft-365-business-products\">Compare Microsoft 365 Plans<\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Choose Business Premium or E3 <strong><em>30-day free trial<\/em> link to start the process of signing up for either one of them.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Provide your personal email and begin the setup process<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>1.2 Enter business information<\/h3>\n<p>Enter your company name, <em>mycompany<\/em>, on signup the form \u2014 this forms your domain (e.g., <em>mycompany<\/em>.onmicrosoft.com) and email identity.<\/p>\n<h3>1.3 Create the admin account<\/h3>\n<p>You\u2019ll set up a global admin account like admin@<em>mycompany<\/em>.onmicrosoft.com. This will be your main Microsoft 365 admin account for managing your Microsoft 365 plan, users, and services.<\/p>\n<h3>1.4 Provide payment info<\/h3>\n<p>Enter your credit card (nothing is charged on it for 30 days). Confirm and start the trial.<\/p>\n<h3>1.5 Enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)<\/h3>\n<p>Set up MFA using the <strong>Microsoft authenticator app<\/strong> for the admin account.<\/p>\n<h3>1.6 Access the Admin center<\/h3>\n<p>Go to \ud83d\udc49 <a href=\"https:\/\/admin.microsoft365.com\/\">Microsoft 365 Admin Center<\/a>\nFrom here, you\u2019ll manage licenses, create users, and configure your tenant.<\/p>\n<h2>\u2601\ufe0f Step 2: Sign Up for an Azure subscription<\/h2>\n<p>Now use your Microsoft 365 <strong>admin account<\/strong> to create a Pay-as-you-go Azure subscription.<\/p>\n<h3>2.1 Sign up for Azure<\/h3>\n<p>\ud83d\udc49 <a href=\"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/en-us\/free\">Azure Free and Pay-As-You-Go<\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Choose <strong>Pay-As-You-Go since getting a free Azure trial won\u2019t work<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Sign in with the Microsoft 365 admin account<\/li>\n<li>Complete identity verification and enter payment info<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u26a0\ufe0f You won&#8217;t be charged unless you create resources like Dev Box machines.
